SANKARANKU'ITY C., 1961. On the porcellanid crab Porcellanella triloba White (CrustaceaAnomura), a commensal on sea pen : with remarks on allied species. J. Mar. Bio. Ass. Ind., 3 (I and 2): 96-100. Porcellanella triloba White, a common porcellanid crab commensal on the sea pen Pteroeides esperi Herklots, is redescribed in this paper. Porcellanella picta Stimpson is considered as a synonym of P. triloba White and the reasons for this action are given. SAN~:ARANKtrrrv C., 1961. On decapod Brachyura from the Andaman and Nicobar islands. 1. Families Portunidae, Ocypodidae, Grapsidae and Mictyridae. J. Mar. Biol. Ass. Ind., 3 (42): 101-119. This is the first instalment in a series of papers on the Brachyura of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and deals with the families Portunidae, Ocypodidae, Grapsidae and Mictyridae. Twenty-nine species and one variety are described. Eight species of these and one variety are new records for this locality.
SANKARANKUTYYC., 1961. On some crabs (Decapoda-Brachyura) from the Laccadive Archipelago. J. Mar. Biol. Ass. Ind., 3 (I and 2): 120-136. Thirty-six species of crabs were collected from the Laccadive Archipelago. On these five species are new records for this region. SANKOLU K. N., 1961. On the early larval stages of two leucosiid crabs, Philyra corallicola Alcock and Arcania septenspinosa (Fabricius). J. Mar. Biol. Ass. Ind., 3 (1 and 2): 87-91. Early larval stages of Philyra corallicola Alcock and Arcania septemspinosa (Fabricius), as obtained from hatching in the laboratory are described. SCHMIDT U., 1962. Die Arbeiten der Deutschen Wissenschaftlichen Kommission fiir Meeresforschung. Jahresbericht Deut. Fischwirt. 1961/62: 188-197. The German Scientific Commission for the Exploration of the Sea participated in the International Herring Investigation Programme. Long term programmes concerning the stocks of cod, haddock, coalfish, whiting, redfish, and herring were continued. Special attention was paid to the combined biological and hydrographical observations of environmental factors influencing migrations and behaviour of their larvae. Details are given concerning the co-ordination of the German marine research with ICES, ICNAF, and the Permanent Commission of the International Fisheries Convention. The following cruises were carried out by the research vessel Anton Dohrn in 1961 : 1. Cruise to the Southern North Sea and to the English Channel for investigations on herring larvae with regard to environmental factors under the international herring larvae programme. 2. Cruise to Icelandic waters for investigations of coalfish (spawning stock density, availability, migrations, environmental factors influencing distribution, behaviour and catch. 3. Cruise for herring investigations under the international herring programme to the North Sea. Synoptic survey on the distribution and density of young and adult herring in connexion with hydrographical investigations together with the research ships of Denmark, Netherland, England and Scotland. 4. Cruise to the central North Atlantic for investigations into the distribution and density of redfish larvae under the Icelandic--German redfish larvae programme. Investigations on the spawning grounds, stock separation of the different types of redfish, influence of hydrographical factors on spawning and the distribution of larvae. 5. Cruise to Iceland-E,3st Greenland for investigations into the selectivity of redfish. 6. Second synoptic cruise for herring investigations under the international herring programme to the North Sea. Distribution and density of herring. Investigations on the stocks of haddock, whiting, coalfish and mackerel. 7. Cruise to the Skagerrak, the Northern North Sea and the waters West of Scotland for research on pelagic herring fishing methods, test of different pelagic gear. 8. Cruise for investigations on the distribution of herring larvae and adult herring to the Southwestern North Sea and English Channel. 9. Cruise to the waters off N-Norway and to the Western Barents Sea for research on the distribution, density and availability of coalfish stocks in relation to hydrographical and meteorological factors. Two meetings of the German Scientific Commission for the Exploration of the Sea took place : On 12 June 1961, in Hamburg, and on 4/5 January, 1962, in Kiel. In June, chiefly administrative questions were discussed. In January, a festive public meeting, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the German Scientific Commission for the Exploration of the Sea, dealt with the history of the German Scientific Commission, recording its tasks and its results within the work of the International Council. The research programme of RV Anton Dohrn in 1962 and the programme of the German Commission for marine biology and hydrography were discussed, with reoorts on the German participation in the work of ICEA and 1CNAF.
SARMIENTO R. and R. A. KtRnY, 1962. Recent Sediments of Lake Maracaibo. J. Sediment. Petrol., 32 (4): 698-724. This paper describes the Recent sediments of Lake Maracaibo, which attain a thickness of as much as 30 m and consist predominantly of very fine-grained, loosely deposited, dark greenish-grey muds.
