FOCUS jockeying between the prices of the oils and alcohol supply has made buyers cautious. The global oleochemicals industry is expected to remain unstable in 2012 because of the continued volatile prices of palm oil, fats and oils feedstocks; changes in Indonesia’s export tax policy; and a depressed world economy. Ethoxylates US ethylene oxide market on the fast track to growth US ethylene oxide producers are planning several expansions in anticipation of strong downstream demand. With the completion of its $795 M (€604 M) buyout of USAbased ethylene oxide/monoethylene glycol (EO/MEG) producer Old World Industries, Thai polyester producer Indorama Ventures Ltd (IVL) is now integrated into both of its key raw materials. IVL runs a 432,000 tonne/y polyethylene terephthalate plant in Decatur, IL, USA, which is beside BP’s 1.15 M tonne/y purified terephthalic acid unit. Old World’s EO/MEG plant has a crude EO capacity of 435,000 tonnes/y and also makes 204,000 tonnes/y of purified EO and 358,000 tonnes of MEG. Meanwhile, Huntsman plans to boost capacity at its plant in Port Neches, TX, USA by 250 M lbs/y (113,000 tonnes/y). The plant can produce 460,000 tonnes/y of EO. Recommended for use in body washes and shampoos is the concentrated sulfate-free surfactant blend Iselux SFS, which only requires water for dilution and salt to thicken for stable, clear, finished compositions. Non-sulfate surfactant concentrate Iselux SLB can be coldpressed. It can also be applied to make structured systems that entail the use of high amounts of oils or other non-compatible actives. Both systems are mild and are claimed to deliver outstanding foaming properties, producing a dense luxurious lather and leaving an elegant after-feel on skin and hair. The products were introduced at incosmetics 2012 in Barcelona, Spain. Dow Personal Care unveils biodegradable EcoSense Surfactants for shampoos and body washes Dow Personal Care introduces EcoSense Surfactants, a naturally biodegradable family of products developed for optimum end-use performance in the shampoo and body wash segments. The 100% vegetable-originated surfactant is sulfate-free, contains no synthetic thickeners or preservatives, all while still offering excellent foaming and rinsability in formulations. When tested against sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) shampoos, EcoSense Surfactants offer better flash foam and rinsability. EcoSense Surfactants were also tested against sulfate-free shampoo formulations and proved to have equal/better flash foam and rinsability. With a pH level of 11.512.5, this composition for shampoos and body washes is compatible with a broad range of surfactants, rheology modifiers and cationic conditioning polymers. Dr Straetmans introduces new emulsifier Dr Straetmans launched a new emulsifier at in-cosmetics 2012.

Dermofeel GO soft (INCI: polyglyceryl2 sesquioleate) is a natural foodapproved emulsifier and is reported to be non-greasy and easy to apply. It forms water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions of superb light textures and incredible soft touch, the company says. W/O concepts are frequently used for sun care and baby products as well as for intensive skin care, mature skin or protective concepts. However, W/O products are not very popular for their sensorial profile, which is generally perceived by the consumer as heavy, greasy on the skin and ‘oldfashioned’, Straetmans explains. Dermofeel GO soft is a versatile W/O emulsifier with a ‘unique skin feel’, it says. It converts water-in-oil creams into soft and pleasant formulations that are easily applied on the skin. According to the company, Dermofeel GO soft is also economic in use and the concentration needed is very low.
