EPDM sealing materials resist high temperatures
A
new generation of EPDM materials has been introduced by Freudenberg Process Seals. These materials, which can resist temperatures up to 180°C, are much more resistant to steam and can even withstand temperatures as high as 210°C for short periods, claims the firm. Moreover, the new EPDM generation boasts exceptional resistance to CIP/SIP media. They are available in three hardness grades: 60 EPDM 290; 70 EPDM 291; and 85 EPDM 292. The 70 EPDM 291 grade is the standard elastomer designed for use in static sealing applications. For dynamic seals, a Reduced Friction by Nanotechnology (RFN) coating is applied to the material. This is used to modify it in such a way that not only reduces the coefficient of friction but also keeps this reduced level virtually constant over the entire service life of the component. The harder 85 EPDM 292 also can be used for dynamic sealing applications, while 60 EPDM 290 has been specially designed for diaphragms, where high flexibility is required. These grades meet the specifications of the European standard DIN EN 681 - 1 WB and the American standard NSF 61, while 70 EPDM 291 meets all the requirements of the most important drinking-water regulations in Germany, set by Deutsche Vereinigung des Gas- und Wasserfaches (DVGW) (KTW, W270 and W534), Great Britain (WRAS) and France (ACS) without restrictions. All three meet the tough requirements of the FDA and 3-A Sanitary Standard Class I.I certification.

Carbon-fibre material added to Greene, Tweed portfolio
G
reene, Tweed and Co has expanded its WR thermoplastic composite portfolio with the addition of WR600. WR600 is a carbon-fibre reinforced compression moulded thermoplastic composite material that offers almost universal resistance to a wide range of aggressive chemicals, and possesses excellent dry-run capabilities, reducing pump damage during start-up and upset conditions that causes costly down time. ‘WR600 provides a highly effective material for customers seeking superior chemical resistance and extended dry-run capabilities in harsh pump environments, commented Jonathan Pledger, Vice President and General Manager, Greene, Tweed’s PetroChem & Power Business.

ohn Crane has signed a joint development agreement with Hughes Christensen, part of oil field services company Baker Hughes. The deal covers the development of new sealing technologies and products for use on the Tricone range of rock drilling bits manufactured by Baker Hughes. John Crane has also signed a similar ‘back-to-back’ agreement with international composite component manufacturer Greene, Tweed & Co, whose products may be incorporated into future development work. The umbrella agreement between John Crane and Baker Hughes defines the parameters under which the two companies will begin a series of development projects. These will focus on various areas, such as the creation of improved seal designs, lower friction sealing elements and a replacement for the traditional O-ring seal used on larger rock bits. ‘This is a major milestone in our 14-year long relationship with Baker Hughes. Over that time we have increased our involvement with this customer, moving through various stages of accreditation to our current standing as single source supplier to the Baker Hughes plants in both the USA and Belfast. It also strengthens our relationship with Greene, Tweed & Co, with which we already work very closely,’ commented Stuart Hall, Technical Director, John Crane Northern Europe. ‘The cost of retrieving a failed bit inside a drill hole can often be extremely high so each bit is only used for as long as the drilling operator is confident that it will perform properly.’
