Australian desal plant gets the go-ahead

power plant in the Netherlands. The new hard coal-fired units will provide clean, reliable electricity for more than 3 million homes and cut CO2 emissions by about 2.5 million tons per year compared with the older systems. The new units are designed to co-fire up to 10% biomass, and can be retrofitted with equipment used to capture CO2 after combustion. • Alstom has merged its power generation activities into a single sector, Alstom Power, bringing together Power Systems (plants, equipments and retrofit ) and Power Service (aftersales, from service to renovation and spare parts).

ustralia’s Environment Minister Peter Garrett has given conditional approval to the Victorian Government’s proposed desalination plant near Wonthaggi. The desalination will supply up to 150 billion litres of water a year to Melbourne and the surrounding region. The Australian government is implementing a A$1 billion National Urban Water and Desalination Plan to help secure the water supplies of Australia’s major cities.

GE Hitachi Nuclear teams up with Indian nuclear industry companies

G

E Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) has signed separate project development agreements with the

Nuclear Power Corp of India (NPCIL) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) as the companies prepare to collaborate on building multiple GEHdesigned nuclear reactors to help meet India’s energy production goals. Mumbai-based nuclear utility NPCIL operates 17 reactors, while New Delhi-based BHEL manufactures and supplies power generation equipment and components. Under the preliminary agreements, GEH will begin planning with NPCIL and BHEL for the necessary resources in manufacturing and construction management for a potential multiple-unit 1350 MW Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) nuclear power station. The new agreements lay the foundation for cooperation between GEH and the two Indian companies as additional steps are taken by the Indian and US governments to implement the agreement on civilian nuclear cooperation they signed last year.

Metso supplies chemical recovery line to Sweden’s Korsnäs

M

etso Corp will supply a new evaporation plant and two recovery boiler upgrades to Korsnäs AB’s pulp mill in Gävle, Sweden in a 20 million order. The evaporation plant has the capacity to evaporate 750 tonnes of water per hour and it concentrates black liquor from pulp cooking for the recovery boiler combustion up to the dry solid content of 75%. The new evaporation plant is part of the mill’s modernization project and will replace three existing evaporation units. The new plant will significantly increase the mill’s overall energy efficiency in addition to improving availability and environmental performance. Start-up for the evaporation plant is scheduled for the second quarter of 2010. The mill’s two existing recovery boilers will also be upgraded for higher dry solids content from the new evaporation plant. Metso’s multi-level air system will be installed in both boilers to improve the combustion efficiency, environmental performance and availability of the recovery boilers. Start-up of the first recovery boiler is scheduled for the second quarter of 2009 and the second recovery boiler for the fourth quarter of 2010.
