ANNOUNCEMENTS Latest ACEND Accreditation Decisions Published Online The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) is the Academy’s accrediting agency for education programs preparing students for careers as Registered Dietitian Nutritionists and Dietetic Technicians, Registered. ACEND establishes and enforces accreditation standards that ensure the quality and continued

improvement of nutrition and dietetics education programs. The accreditation decisions made at the most recent ACEND meeting are available at http:// www.eatright.org/ACEND/content.aspx ?id¼7829 and include the status of programs that have received candidacy for accreditation, full accreditation, probationary accreditation, and withdrawal from accreditation.
ACEND Invites Program Accreditation Input Accredited dietetics education programs are periodically reviewed to ensure they uphold the standards set forth by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Part of the program review process is the consideration of thirdparty input on a program’s practices, procedures, and educational outcomes. Members with concern as to a program’s compliance with the standards are encouraged to forward their comments to ACEND. A list of programs under review for candidacy or full accreditation and a corresponding site visit scheduled is available at http://www.eatright.org/ ACEND/content.aspx?id¼7974. ABOUT PEOPLE Obituary Martha Frances Hoffman, MPH, RD, September 2014, was a member of the Academy for more than 50 years. She graduated from North Texas State College (now the University of North Texas) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics and served a 1-year dietetic internship at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (now Brigham and Women’s Hospital) in Boston, MA, before beginning her career as a dietitian at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX. Hoffman received an MPH degree from the University of California School of Public Health in Berkeley, CA, in 1965, and went on to work in public health for 31 years. Her career included positions as a public health nutrition consultant at the Cancer and

Heart Division of the Texas State Department of Health in Austin, the University of Texas SW Medical School/City of Dallas Children and Youth, and the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services in Jacksonville and Tallahassee. She also held offices in district dietetic associations in Texas and Florida and served as a delegate to the Academy. James L. Surratt, RD, September 2014, was a retired chief dietitian at the Veterans Administration Hospital, East Orange and Lyons, NJ. Virginia F. Harger, MS, RD, October 2014, was a Life member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Harger earned a bachelor’s degree in Dietetics and Food Service Management from Washington State College (now University) and a master’s degree from Kansas State University. She began her teaching career at Ohio University and Stanford University before joining the US Army to serve as a hospital dietitian during World War II. After the war, Harger returned to teaching at Ohio State University from 1948-1967, and served as head of the Department of Foodservice Systems Management at Oregon State University from 1967 until her retirement in 1978. During her career, she co-authored the college textbook Introduction to Foodservice Management and served as an elected officer and member of the Board of Directors of the American Dietetic Association. The Virginia F. Harger Scholarship Fund was established in her honor. Mary L. Brogden, RD, October 2014, was a graduate of Auburn University and a member of the West Florida and Mobile Dietetic Associations.
