FROM THE ACADEMY ABOUT PEOPLE Obituary Medallion Winner Carol Hall Dies Former Medallion Award winner Carol Hall, RD, passed away on September 8, 2014. She began her career in dietetics after earning a bachelor of science degree in dietetics from Iowa State University and spent the next 38 years working in VA Medical Centers in Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago, and for the last 22 years at Hines VA Hospital in Maywood, IL, where she was the director of the Department of Nutrition and Food Service. Hall was an active volunteer and leader at the local, state, and national level, serving as president of the Chicago and Illinois Dietetic Associations, speaker of the House of Delegates, secretary/treasurer on the Academy Board of Directors, and president of the Academy Foundation. In 2000, she was recognized by the Academy with the Medallion Award, which is bestowed upon members who exemplify leadership in the profession and dedication to the Academy. Her contributions were also recognized by the Illinois Dietetic Association through the establishment of the Carol V. Hall Scholarship Fund. In addition to her dietetics career, Hall was an accomplished singer and professional member of the Chicago and Grant Park Symphony choruses as well as an active soloist. Many of her colleagues noted her beautiful voice in reflecting upon her life and career: Remembering Carol Hall is easy for me as she took me to the Boston Pops at the very first ADA Annual Meeting I attended after becoming a newly minted dietitian. She rose with the audience as Eugene Ormandy conducted the orchestra in the National Anthem. Carol sang and, after the first few bars, the audience silenced, Carol sang the remainder of the Anthem in her melodic and powerful operatic voice. At the conclusion, the audience applauded and Ormandy walked across the stage, turned to her and bowed in front of her! When we sat down again in our seats, she leaned over and apologized for singing the anthem in such a way. She whispered: “I did it because I have always wanted to sing under the baton of Eugene Ormandy!” Needless to say, I was mesmerized and from that moment on, a devoted fan of Carol and her remarkable talents. And, when I served as ADA President, she agreed to sing the opening session solo where she belted out God Bless America to one and all. She was a friend, a mentor, and a remarkably great professional. — Doris Derelian, PhD, JD, RDN, FADA, FAND Carol was such an inspiration in both song and leadership. —Jessie Pavlinac, MS, RD, CSR, LD How wonderful she was and such a leader at a critical time. —Susan Finn, PhD, RDN, FADA, FAND She was the gold standard of dietetics and an amazing leader. Her grace, warmth, and kindness to every employee, staff member, patient, and intern was inspirational, and she ran a “tight ship” with high professional standards. It is an honor to have worked with her, learned from her and known her as a friend and colleague.
