Labyrinth seals ensure durability of deep groove ball bearings

chaeffler, a manufacturer of bearings and other precision components for the automotive, aerospace and industrial sectors, has developed deep groove ball bearings for passenger car drive shafts that incorporate labyrinth seals, which protect against water and contamination. Deep groove ball bearings can be found on the drive trains of a wide range of vehicles, including front-wheel drive compact cars, limousines, small vans and all-terrain sport utility vehicles (SUVs). According to Schaeffler (UK) Ltd, many of the applications in which these bearings are used mean that they are often subjected to extremely harsh conditions – where water and contamination can penetrate into the inside of the bearing and cause damage. The company claims that its CoRX and Twin-Ax deep groove ball bearings for passenger car drive shafts put an end to this problem by using a labyrinth sealing system that keeps contamination out of the inside of the bearing. It says these products use two sealing rings that are smartly interconnected and make the ingress of water and contamination impossible. Unlike the existing Seal-Slinger+Ax deep groove ball bearings, these latest products feature cassette seals. Whilst CoRX bearings are

equipped with axial and radial seals, Twin-Ax bearings feature two axial lips made from corrosion-free stainless steel. The outer sealing ring is water and dust-repellent. Both bearings have a third sealing lip, with minimal interference, to ensure that lubricating grease stays inside the bearing, and it also provides improved wear protection. In addition, the frictional torque inside the bearings is minimised through optimised sealing lip contact, which means that they are ideal components for high-speed drive shafts. These bearings are suitable for a wide range of applications, says the company. They can be installed on both a prop shaft and side shaft, and require no additional seals to be fitted – depending on the customer’s requirements. arker Hannifin Corp’s O-Ring & Engineered Seals Division, which provides elastomeric technology and designs precision-engineered sealing systems for a wide variety of commercial, mobile, industrial and aerospace markets, has launched Ultra FFKM material FF156. A 75-durometer elastomer, this material reduces cost of ownership by extending seal life in high-temperature and aggressive chemical environments, says the company. It is available as a custom-moulded, extruded, spliced, O-ring or lathe-cut product. The material’s improved high-temperature resilience makes it a prime candidate for use in the aerospace, heavy-duty mobile, chemical processing and semiconductor industries where temperatures typically exceed 204°C (400°F). FF156 also offers excellent hot water and steam resistance, and is more cost-effective than other FFKM materials, says the firm. ‘One of the biggest sealing challenges in mechanical seal applications is a requirement for low breakout friction. In order to accomplish this O-rings are designed with very low squeeze and as such there is a risk of leakage due to compression set,’ explained Tyler Yonker, Territory Sales Engineer, Engineered Materials Group, Parker Hannifin. ‘FF156 shows significant improvement with low compression set values when tested side

Seals, gaskets can be spotted by metal detectors and inspected by X-rays

ndustrial Magnetics Inc (IMI) is offering seals and gaskets for its magnetic separation equipment for gravity-fed and pneumatic line conveying applications that can be spotted by metal detectors and inspected by X-rays. The company, which is based in Boyne City, Michigan, USA, says that the new seal and gasket options protect against elastomeric contamination in the processing line and subsequent product recalls, downtime and waste. According to the firm, component parts can degrade over time and standard elastomeric material is often missed by even the strongest detection systems because of its low conductivity. The new products include the Detectomer line of Buna seals and Silicone gaskets, and Ensinger’s Hydex seals – all of which contain

a select additive that can be spotted by metal detectors, X-ray systems, optical scanners and captured by magnetic separators. Available for IMI’s products with 1-inch and 3-inch OD magnetic circuit configurations, the seals and gaskets are certified food-grade compliant, meeting the US Food and Drug Administration’s code of federal regulations for food safety. In addition, they comply with the recommendations set forth in the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and the principles of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP). Sealing system provides protection from gamma radiation

eele Engineering Bv of Aalten, The Netherlands, has developed a sealing system which, it says, is resistant to gamma rays. According to the Dutch company, transit openings in the walls and floors of environments handling nuclear radiation can be a source of risk. Gamma radiation can find its way into adjacent areas through the transit openings, if these openings are not effectively sealed and protected. Targeted at such environments, the XATTAX sealing system is resistant to gamma rays and offers shielding against radioactive radiation. Its protective effect is so good that work can now also be done closer to the reactor, claims the company. XATTAX is the general name for a collection of products that can be used singly or in combination to achieve the desired sealing and shielding properties. At its heart is the Radiatt system which, applied in a concrete wall 80 cm thick, offers 100% shielding and protection against nuclear radiation. The firm says that Radiatt can be combined with several of its other products without seriously affecting sealing and shielding qualities. For example, the combination of Radiatt and Nofirno – sealing technology that is fire safe and water tight – offers 99.9% shielding against radiation. The Radiatt system is also entirely maintenancefree and has a service life of 80 years. The results of tests carried out with the system have been recorded in a Kiwa Covenant, which includes all the application details.

IN BRIEF MPM Holdings posts net sales of $594 million for its second quarter Financial results released recently by MPM Holdings Inc reveal that the company, which specialises in silicones and silicone derivatives, posted net sales for the three months ended 30 June 2017 of $594 million – an increase of 1% compared with $586 million recorded for the corresponding period of 2017. Net income for the quarter was $19 million compared with a net loss of $10 million recorded a year earlier. Seal plays key role in intake manifold with integrated intercooler German filtration company Mann+Hummel used the 2017 Frankfurt motor show to exhibit what, it says, is the first intake manifold with a fully integrated intercooler. With full integration, the cooler is completely enclosed by the intake manifold shells, which gives the entire system greater stability, compared with mounted parts, as there is no external sealing surface, says the firm. The seal, which consists of two components between the cooler and intake manifold shells, is characterised by good resistance to chemicals and low leakage. It is made from a plastic frame, comprising polyamide 6 with a 35% glass-fibre component, and an elastomer seal made from fluorinated rubber, which has good resistance to temperature and media. EnPro concludes asbestos claims resolutions process The joint plan for the reorganisation of certain EnPro Industries Inc’s subsidiaries, including Garlock Sealing Technologies Llc (GST), to resolve their current and future asbestos claims has been consummated and become effective. Under the plan, EnPro retained ownership of GST and OldCo. ‘The consummation of the joint plan represents the successful culmination of many years of dedicated effort to resolve the asbestos burden that has weighed on our company since we were founded in 2002,’ commented Steve Macadam, President and CEO, EnPro.
