T h e C ou n ty C ou n cil o f M a r io n C oun ty, Ind., has m ade an ap p rop riation to start a dental clin ic in the cou n ty schools. T h is is a direct result o f the exam ination conducted by the m em bers o f the Indian apolis D en tal So ciety, ab ou t one year a g o . C oop era tion , vision and g o o d organization seem to be the outstanding features o f the dental w o rk at P on tiac, M ich . T h is w ork was org an ized and is conducted by the board o f education, departm ent o f health and county R ed Cross. D r . P . B. Jones, the sch ool den tist, in a recent report, m entions the splendid coop eration o f dentists in p rivate practice, teachers, principals and sch ool nurses. Six schools are e q u ip p e d , w ith dental chairs, so that the dentist serves the schools in rotation rather than h a v in g the ch ild ren leave the sch ool and com e to a central office. E v ery fa ll, a survey is m ade b y the dentist and his as sistant. A m irro r and ex p lo re r are used, and cavities, abscesses an d occlusions are noted, as w e ll as the cleanliness o f the m outh. On Saturday m orn ings, a clin ic f o r the p resch ool ch ild is held at the central clin ic o f the health department. E v ery aftern oon fr o m 4 until 5 o ’ c lo ck , D r. Jones is at this clin ic. T h ere he cares f o r the em ergen cy cases referred fr o m a ll o f the schools b y the sch ool nurses. A ll dental w o r k is restricted to indigents. D r. Jones lectures to c iv ic and health g rou p s and has established a 100 per cent dental room . A l l children whose m ouths need no care at the time o f the annual survey are perm itted to p lace their names on a large w hite card on the w a ll— the h on or r o ll. A s the rem aining children have their dental defects corrected, either by a private dentist o r the sch ool den tist, their names are added. W h en everyon e’s name is on the list, the cardb oard is rem oved and replaced by a la rg e black fe lt banner w ith oran ge letters, reading “ D en tal H o n o r R o o m .” Last year, there w ere tw e n ty -fo u r 100 per cent room s.
