HANDKEA WANDAE Skirg. nom. nov. (LYCOPERDACEAE) ALINA SKIRGIELLO Institute of Botany, Warsaw University, Poland In 1935, a paper appeared concerning the vigorous growth of a species of Lycoperdaceae, near the town of Ostrow Wielkopolski (Wysocko Wielkie) in Poland. The fungus grew on a rich substratum in Alnetum, amongst Rubus idaeus and Urtica dioica. It was considered to be a species new to science, namely Calvatia lycoperdoides Koscielny & Wojtowicz (in Roczniki Nauk Roln. Lesn. 34: 141, figs 1-2-, 1935). The basidiome was 26 em tall, the head 9.4 cm in diam and the chambered stem (subgleba) was 10.6 cm diam at the base, and 6.2 ern diam mid-way. Microscopically, the verrucose spores were found to be 4 - 7 11m diam, and the capillitial threads lacked septa. Examination of the accompanying illustrations has since confirmed that this species represents a further synonym of the common species, Calvatia excipuliformis (Shaeffer: Pers.) Perdeck. Almost 30 years later, another species

of Calvatia was published from the U.S.A.. Calvatia lycoperdoides A.H. Smith apud Zeller & Smith in Lloydia 27: 175, pl 12A (1964). When Kreisel (1989) revised the genus Calvatia, he proposed a new genus, Handkea, for those species which lacked septa in the capillitial threads but contained pits in the wall. The combination Handkea lycoperdoides (A.H. Smith) Kreisel (in Nova Hedw. 48: 287, 1989) was proposed. This is clearly based upon a later homonym of the earlier published, valid name, Calvatia lycoperdoides Koscienlny & Wojtowicz, and therefore cannot serve as the basis for a new combination (ICBN Art. 64.1) and must be rejected. The new name is herewith proposed: Handkea wandae Skirg. nom. nov. (basionym: Calvatia lycoperdoides A.H. Smith). The epithet is in honour of the Polish mycologist, Wanda Rudnicka, who specialises in dune-fungi.
