Singapore: Ishihara – TiO2 ISK Singapore, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ishihara Sangyo Kaisha (of Osaka), intends to step up the capacity of its Jurong chloride-route TiO2 pigment plant from 45,000 tonnes/y to 48,500 tonnes/y during the fiscal year ending March 2005. Further expansion is planned, raising capacity to 60,000 tonnes/y during the year to end-March 2008. Switzerland: Ciba – DPP Ciba is nearing completion of a new 250 tonnes/y production line at its Monthey plant for producing diketopyrrolo-pyrrole (DPP) pigments capacity. This is described as a 20% expansion, so total DPP capacity at Monthey will become 1500 tonnes/y.

Columbian saw 17% increase in worldwide carbon black sales last year Columbian Chemicals (part of the Phelps Dodge group), the world’s third largest carbon black supplier, reported operating income at $51.1 M (up 8.7%) on sales of $644.2 M (up 17.4%) for full-year 2003. Sales to North American markets were particularly strong. Profit margins improved in Europe and Latin America, thanks to more favourable exchange rates and firmer prices. Holliday joins Elemica trading network Holliday Pigments (part of the Yule Catto group), the world’s largest manufacturer of ultramarine, has become one of the latest members of Elemica, described as “the leading global network for chemicals buying, selling and supply chain management.” Elemica was created in 2001 by eight founder member companies (see ‘Focus on Pigments’, Apr 2001, 1-2). It now has more than 150 members. Mr Robert Rae (Chairman of Holliday Pigments) said: “The move to Elemica is part of our overall Ebusiness strategy to shorten delivery and order lead times, as well as to improve accuracy in customer service, sales and purchasing.
