wo articles, “Surgical Prevention of Pulmonary Emboli: Vena Caval Interruption” and “Teaching the Patient Having a Vena Caval Filter” provide the basis for the first AORN Journal home study program. The program’s behavioral objectives and examination were prepared by Pat Niessner Palmer, RN, MS, nurse editor, with consultation from Janice Allen, RN, MS, program specialist. Registered nurses will be able to earn two contact hours (.2 CEUs) by demonstrating achievement of the behavioral objectives. Nurses who wish to earn credit must achieve a
70% score on the multiple-choice examination and send it with a completed application form and appropriate fees to AORN Accounting Department 10170 E Mississippi Ave Denver, Colo 80231. Each applicant that successfully completes the program will receive a certificate of completion. The home study program contact hours/ continuingeducation units will be included on an annual transcript for the preceding year ending June 30. They are mailed each August. The deadline for this program is July 31, 1984.
Behavioral Objectives After reading and studying the two articles on vena caval interruption, the nurse will be able to (1) describe early surgical attempts at preventing pulmonary emboli (2) relate the major factors in the development of deep venous thrombosis with patient situations (3) identify major signs and symptoms of venous thrombosis and pulmonary emboli (4) interpret results of preoperative testing as they relate to treatment of pulmonary emboli (5) describe rationale for intraoperativeprocedure and nursing intervention (6) recognize necessary instrumentation for transvenous approach to insertion of the Greenfield or Mobin-Uddin filter (7) identify appropriate instructional content and learner activities for patients having an inferior vena caval filter (8) evaluate patient preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative physical and emotional needs. 55
