Home Study Program VENTRICULAR ASSISTDEVICES

The article “Ventricular assist devices: A bridge to cardiac transplantation,” provides the basis for this AORN Journal home study program. The behavioral objectives and examination for this program were prepared by Judith M. Mathias, RN, BS, clinical editor, with consultation from Janice R. Allen, RN, MS, senior coordinator, continuing education. Each applicant who successfully completes the program will receive a certificate of completion indicating the number of contact hours earned. The contact hours/continuing education units earned will also be included on an annual transcript for the preceding year ending June 30. The deadline for this program is April 30, 1988. Registered nurses can earn two contact hours by demonstrating achievement of the behavioral

objectives. Nurses who wish to earn credit must achieve a 70% score on the multiple choice examination and send it with a completed application form and appropriate fee to: AORN Accounting Department c/o Home Study Program 10170 E Mississippi Ave Denver, CO 80231 AORN is accredited by the Western Regional Accrediting Committee of the American Nurses’ Association as a provider and approval body for continuing education for nursing. Provider numbers appear on certificates of attendance. If completing more than one program at a time, send all answer sheets with combined fees to AORN Accounting Department. Answer sheets will not be returned.

Behavioral Objectives After reading and studying the article on ventricular assist devices (VADs), the nurse will be able to do the following: state characteristics of the design of the VAD, discuss the history of mechanical assist devices, identify indications for use of a VAD, list contraindications for use of a VAD, discuss the surgical procedure for VAD implantation, identify parameters to monitor on patients with a VAD, and list the medications associated with the penoperative care of cardiac patients.
