Ideology and Social Sciences, Destutt deTracy and French Liberalism, Brian William Head (Dordrecht: Martines Nijhoff, 1985), International Archives of the History of Ideas 112, vii + 229 pp., e33.25, Dfl. 12.00, $45.00. Destutt de Tracy has been ignored by most English-speaking scholars. H.J. Laski’s The Rise of European Liberalism (1962) and Stephen Holmes’s Benjamin Constant and the Making of Modern Liberalism (1984) have no mention of him. J.P. Mayer’s PoIitical Thought in France from the Revolution to the Fifth Republic (1961) contains only one reference to Tracy, and that comes in a quotation from Saint-Beuve who classes him as an influence on the formation of his mind, together with Daunou, Lamarck and physiology.
