Meeting Report
International Summer School on Membrane Science and Technology, Lanzhou, China, August 15-30,1986 Wang Ying, Director of the Chinese Institute of Membrane Science and Technology, in cooperation with Professor E. Drioli, President of the European Society of Membrane Science and Technology, arranged far the “Lanzhou International Summer School on Membrane Science and Technology” to coincide with the “International Exhibition on Membrane Science in Technology.‘.’ The two events were held in tandem in Lanzhou, China, from August 15 to 30,1986. The summer school was attended by 241 students and scientists from Australia, China, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, the U.S., and West Germany, and was the largest membrane-related meeting ever held in China. The summer session opened with a special ceremony and an address by Mr. Xue Kesheng, Director of the Gansu Science and Technology Commission. Lectures covered the range of membrane-related issues, from membrane theory to applications. A list of lecture titles and lecturers is presented below. Lectures An update on membrane technology. E. Drioli Fundamentals of separations with membranes. H. Strathmann Mechanism of membrane formation. H. Strathmann Mechanism of gas transport in polymers. M. Pegoraro Reverse osmosis processes: theory and applications. G. Jonsson Research on RO and UF membrane materials. Liu Tinhui Electrodialysis. H. Strathmann Dimensioning, engineering and operation of UF and MF plants for biotechnology and food applications. R.F. Madsen Pervaporation. H. Strathmann Memtec’s unique membrane technology. Robert Wale Industrial applications of new ultrafiltration membranes. M. Rampichini Mechanism of achieving controlled release: diffusion, erosion, osmosis. R. Baker Controlled release. R. Baker Enzyme membranes. E. Drioli Liquid surfactants, gel membranes. E. Cussler Membrane distillation. E. Drioli Biomembranes and applications of biotechnology. A.K. Singh
Eleven membrane companies, factories, and institutes from six countries displayed photographs, data, samples of membranes, modules, and devices in addition to distributing abundant literature. Not only did the twin events promote membrane science and technology internationally, but by virtue of their

location and the number of Chinese participants, were historic in the development of membrane science and technology in China. As a direct result of this summer session, a “Preparatory Group of the Chinese Society of Membrane Science and Technology,” comprising 21 Chinese institutes, was established. Director Wang Ying was elected to head this preparatory group. Of particular value, according to the participants, was the opportunity to examine first-hand international trends in membrane technology. Participants were very enthusiastic about more summer schools. In response to this demand, Professor Drioli and Director Wang Ying have tentatively planned a summer school to be held in China in 1988. Contributed by WANG YING and E. DRIOLI
