regulating current circuitry eliminates all trial and error normally required to compensate for fluctuations due to varying cable length, contact placing or contact resistance. The H600 is available in four models all of which provide AC magnetising current. The H600 series are multi-purpose units for magnetic particle inspection by the wet continuous method. They will accept components up to 2.5m in length, according to the model, with current outputs of either 3 or 5 kA.

Iron Loss Tester Martron Limited have introduced an iron loss tester (DAC-IR -1 ) designed for the measurement of magnetic loss in iron and steel sheet (see Fig. 2). Unlike previous methods, such as the Epstein square, the measurement is carried out on a single sheet of material. A direct reading of Watts loss is obtained with four ranges 2.5,5, 10 and 20 W/kg. Selection for measurement of oriented or nonoriented samples at 50 or 60 Hz is provided. Flux density may be set at 1, 1.5 or 1.7 Tesla for materials of thickness between 0.05 and 0.99 mm. Two probes are supplied with the DAC-IR-i which enables specimens of 15 x 15 mm to be measured.

Real time PCB inspection Using X-ray sensitive, closed circuit television (CCTV) equipment, Andrex has introduced an X-ray system to provide real time inspection of multilayer circuit boards. The system is based inside a lead lined steel enclosure. In operation, the circuit board is placed on an X-Y table capable of scanning an area of up to 460 x 600 mm. Located above the table is an X-ray source with a small focal spot (0.5 x 0.5 mm) and below an X-ray sensitive TV camera. The operator is presented with an X-ray image of a subject area of 12 x 10 mm, displayed on a 432 mm diameter CCTV monitor. If required a hard-copy of the TV image can be made by positioning of a Polaroid plate camera.

Strain logger interface Vishay Instruments have introduced an interface module which permits the Hewlett-Packard 9825A desk top computer to scan, analyse and record data from the Vishay 220 data acquisition system. The HP 9825A is controlled by a prerecorded operational programmc which allows inexperienced users to operate the system. Features of the system include paper or magnetic tape recording, setable alarm limits and a range of data reduction capabilities.

Table functions such as auto-home movements, pre-programmed scanning and digital input and output parts can be provided if required. Andrex claim that time savings over Polaroid radiography of between 60% and 80% is possible with tests based on an inspection schedule of 4-5 sample areas per board. Subsea corrosion control Roxby Engineering International Limited have introduced a Bathycorrometer (Mark V) designed to ascertain the corrosion or protection condition of any submerged steel structure. The unit operates on the principle of measuring the potential difference between the structure and a silver reference electrode. In operation, the Bathycorrometer is placed next to the surface or structure to be monitored. The potential difference is then shown on a liquid crystal display, back illuminated for operations in murky lighting conditions. Six probes are supplied with the instrument which are suitable for use in steel with thin coatings of paint such as steel piling and undersea pipes.
