Dainippon Ink plans FRP joint venture in China Japanese firm Dainippon Ink and Chemical is setting up a joint venture in China for the production and marketing of unsaturated polyester resin and sheet moulding compound (SMC). It is linking up with Japanese trading company Itochu Corp and China’s Tianma Group Corp for the project. The joint venture, Chanzhou Huari New Material Co, is scheduled to start operating in April under a plan to double the unsaturated polyester capacity of Tianma Group to 30 000 tonnes/year. It also intends to complete construction of a 10 000 tonnes/year SMC plant by November. This will be Dainippon’s second resin production project in China, with the other involving urethane resin.

Reinforced Plastics March

1995

Chinese demand for unsaturated polyester resin is steadily increasing in response to growing demand for fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) products such as bathtubs, water tanks, pipes and construction materials. Demand in 1993 rose to 100 000 tonnes, from the 80 000 tonnes of the preceding year. Demand is projected to climb to more than 200 000 tonnes/year within the next three years, coming close to that of Japan. Chanzhou Huari New Material Co will be owned 40% by Dainippon, 20% by Itochu Group and 40% by Tianma Group Corp. Dainippon Ink G Chemicals Inc; tel: + SI-33272-451 I; fax: + 81-3 32 78- 8558. (c)
