news business Pump demand continues to grow
Sulzer acquires Johnston, Crown, and Paco Pumps in US and China expansion
A recent report states that while hundreds of firms manufacture fluid handling pump products throughout the world, fewer than 50 or so may be considered significant from a global perspective. The report, from the market research group Freedonia, goes on to state that the largest and most technically proficient national pump manufacturing industries are located in the United States, Germany and Japan.
In a move to strengthen its position in the power, process, and water segment markets, Sulzer has acquired Precision Castparts Corp (PCC) as well as all shares of its Chinese pump company for $36 million.
The report goes onto say that worldwide demand for industrial pumps is forecast to increase more than 5% annually through 2008 (including price increases) to over US$38 billion. This represents an improvement over the 1998-2003 period, reflecting accelerating macroeconomic growth in the developing regions of Asia/ Pacific, Latin America and Eastern Europe. Primary energy consumption will increase, creating opportunities for pump suppliers in the key energy production sector in the developing world. Although the pump markets in the US, Japan and Western Europe will all see gains, these will lag behind the global average through 2008, but all three will also post a improvement in their respective markets over the performance of the 1998-2003 period. Throughout this, centrifugal pumps will continue to be the most commonly used type due to their varied pressure and load handling capabilities — including the ability to handle liquids with a high solids content — as well as their relatively low maintenance costs. Among the major pump types, diaphragm types will post above-average gains based on rising investment in process manufacturing industries. Turbine pumps will also register advances, benefiting from use in water pumping and sewage applications.

This acquisition gives Sulzer control over PCC companies:
Viking Pump has new president
Johnston, Crown and Paco Pumps, located in Houston, Texas, USA and Wuxi, China. In the last financial year, their turnover in pump business was $98 million. The acquisition complements the existing Sulzer Pumps product portfolio and also includes ten service centers located in North America.
Haskel joins Milton-Roy United Technologies' Hamilton Sundstrand has acquired Haskel, a manufacturer of pneumatically driven, high-pressure pumps and valves, for an undisclosed sum. "The acquisition of Haskel adds a supplier of high-pressure pumps and valves to Hamilton Sundstrand's portfolio of specialty industrial pump businesses and will enhance our presence in the oil and gas industry, particularly in the Middle East," said Ed Laprade, president of Hamilton Sundstrand Industrial enterprises. "Haskel also will add chemical injection
Microfluid movements technology that complements Milton Roy's metering pump business." added Laprade. Haskel will be operated as part of Milton Roy, also a Hamilton Sundstrand business. A manufacturer of metering and specialty pumps, Milton Roy has customer support facilities across the globe and more than half of its sales are to markets outside the US. Hamilton Sundstrand is a subsidiary of United Technologies that designs, manufactures and services industrial and aerospace systems.
Recession 'over' but regional activity varies The latest report from industry analysts Mcllvaine Company concludes that the world has emerged from recession and this has unleashed expenditures to expand and maintain production. However, regional activity is varied. In the US and Europe, the expenditures have centered on repair and improvement of existing facilities, while in Asia, investment is in new plants. A good example of the difference is semiconductor activity between the US and China. This year China will invest 60% as much in semiconductor capital equipment and clean rooms as the US. But, when it comes to expenditures for repairs and consumables, US chip plants will spend six times as much as their Chinese counterparts. By 2008, expenditures for repairs and

consumables will still be three times greater in the US, but new equipment sales will be 50% greater in China. A further MacIIvaine report says the oil and gas industry will continue to be the leading purchaser of valves with worldwide purchases of over $8.4 billion in 2008. This will account for 17% of the $49 billion valve sales for all applications. Some specific markets will be growing at double-digit rates. These include desalination, flat panel display manufacturing, biotechnology, and power plant desulfurization. Refineries will constitute the second largest purchasing industry in 2008 followed by the power and the chemical industry. Municipal wastewater plants will be in the fifth spot.
Bürkert Fluid Control Systems, a provider of integrated valves and pumps, has created a dedicated UK team to exploit its developments of microfluidic applications. The microfluidics range includes solenoid valves with isolating diaphragm, manifolds and dedicated micro pumps.
ABS order makes for packaging move ABS has won an order from the Eendracht Karton Paper Mill in Appingendam, Netherlands, for agitators, pumps and diffusers to set up its new KM11 machine. This project is one of many at the mill, which would take the movement into new areas of the packaging industry possible. The KM11 machine, which will produce paperboard, is hoped to be one of the fastest board machines in Europe. De Eendracht will install four BA pumps to be used as head box pumps. In addition, a total of 17 agitators will be used in several new processes: seven side-entry Scaba agitators and one topentry SCABA agitator for the stock preparation, six side-entry Scaba agitators for several mixing/machine chests and finally three top-entry Scaba agitators for CaCO3 slurry for the coating kitchen. The mill upgrade and investments meant reinforcing the existing wastewater plant to obtain increased wastewater capacity. This will be achieved by an installation of around 2,000 Nopol Prk diffusers from ABS.
