LICHENS OF THE WHITBY FORAY By H. H. KNIGHT

IN districts by the sea lichens are usually plentiful, and we were disappointed in not seeing more in Mulgrave Woods. The trees were mostly bare, but many of the common species were found. Graphis elegans was rare; the two most noteworthy species were Bacidia incompta and Rhirocarpon alboatrum. A few saxicolous lichens were noticed on walls and stones. By the sea at Sandsend Arthopyrenia litoralis was collected on shells of barnacles, and A. halodytes on rocks. The walls on the way to Arncliffe Wood were well covered with lichens. Among these were Lecanora badia, Lecidea fuscoatra and L. plana, Biatorina lenticularis and Bacidia umbrina. Arncliffe Wood is rocky, and is much better for lichens than Mulgrave. Among the lichens seen here were Lecanora subtartarea and Lecanactis abietina, the latter very abundant, and on rocks Racodium rupestre and Lecidea lucida with Calicium arenarium growing on the thallus. Only a short time was available at Goathland to search for lichens, on account of rain. Here Alectoria jubata was growing on a tree and Evernia furfuracea and Lecidea sanguinaria on walls. On the moorlands the two species of Lecidea, L. granulosa and L. coarctata are common, and the var. glebulosa of the latter was also seen. On walls near Whitby, Opegrapha conjluens is common, and also the two species of Lecanora, L. atra and L. parella.
