LITTLE MAGAZINE INTERVIEW INDEX Yvonne Schofer and Barbara Richards
Schofer is humanities bibliographer at Memorial Library, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Richards is administrative assistant at the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, Memorial Library, University of Wisconsin-Madison. -- LITTLE MAGAZINE INTERVIEW INDEX --
This index, listing interviews published in the little magazines actively collected by the Department of Special Collections on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, covers the year 1989, and is the sixth in the annual series started in 1985. Well-known titles such as Bomb, Callaloo, Helicon Nine, and The American Poetry Review are represented along with new entries reflecting the continuing vitality of the little magazine scene in American letters. Today our collection carries approximately 1,200 "live" titles taking their place on the shelf alongside 4,500 magazines published since the early part of this century, most of which by now have ceased publication. In spite of a high attrition rate, new little magazines appear regularly, offering work by new or experimental authors that would stand no chance of appearing in the mainstream press. Formats vary widely, ranging from stapled mimeographed sheets, austere scholarly publications, computer-produced samples, and nonprint media to glossy covers and beautiful printing. Change and growth continue to characterize little magazines; what does not vary is integrity and commitment to literary ideals. It is our goal to reflect these characteristics in our collection and to cover as comprehensively as possible the recent trends of minority, regional, and women's writing. We seek more than ever to collect Englishlanguage journals outside the United States and Great Britain, and to add more Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand titles to our list. reflects the interdisciplinary trends previously noted in recent lists. As usual, we hope that it continues to be a useful source of information and access to an important segment of contemporary literature. Included below is a list of little magazines not found in The International Directory of Little Magazines and Small Presses (25th Edition, 1989-90).
