LITTLE MAGAZINE INTERVIEW INDEX Yvonne Schofer and Barbara R i c h a r d s This is the seventh appearance of our yearly index to interviews published in little magazines received for the Sukov Collection, Department of Special Collections, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Coverage started in 1985 and now spans a seven-year period. An earlier file in the department covers titles indexed since 1976 and is not yet computerized; we welcome inquiries pertaining to the contents of this file. A total of 523 writers, artists, performers, critics, designers, and others are featured in the present list, a substantial increase over the figure of 424 recorded in the previous installment. The variety of these offerings attests to a growing trend of interdisciplinarity. In the field as diverse as that of little magazines, established talents and new voices coexist, coming in good proportion from Australia and New Zealand as well as from North America and the United Kingdom. We continue to add to our active list of little magazines and this year's compilation reflects a higher proportion of titles not included in The InternationalDirectory of Little Magazines and Small Presses (26th ed., 1990-91).

Schofer is humanities bibliographer at Memorial Library, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Richards is administrative assistant at the Department of Special Collections, Memorial Library, University of WisconsinMadison. - - LITTLE MAGAZINE INTERVIEW INDEX - -

(Continued from page 5) applying for a grant or preparing a course, or of college freshmen doing five-page term papers? When we cut our foreign language journals, are we limiting the opportunity for future generations of library users to enhance foreign language skills? Or for users to research alternative historical, social, and economic viewpoints? When we compiled our masses of data and consulted union lists to see where else a journal is currently held, did we know that the data were up-todate and accurate? How do we know that other holding libraries are not looking at our union list entry and considering cancelling their subscription? How much time and effort can be put into distributed resource sharing? Did our cost-per-use data look at hidden costs like check-in, cataloging, binding, inventory/union listing, and storing journals, juxtaposed with all the overt and hidden costs associated with citation verification, borrowing/lending, shipping/transmitting, and copyright fee processing and record maintenance?

Furthermore, will deeper and deeper subscription cuts shift workloads from technical services and circulation to interlibrary loan? I've written editorials about shifting paradigms: the subject is very much on my mind. Yes, we ARE doing our jobs when we cut journal subscriptions. We cannot overspend our budgets, but we take no pleasure in redlining a title on our renewal list either. Still, we can't expect our parent institutions to endlessly subsidize ever-accelerating subscription costs; and we cannot singlehandedlyreplace tenure requirements within our universities and colleges, or the requirements of grant funding agencies. But our cancellation decisions will alter the future shape of information resources, research, and learning. We must therefore ask ourselves what future libraries will be able to offer society and what leadership we can provide now to best preserve the information resources they will need.
