This volume continues this very valuable series of reports and covers the mass spectrometry literature published between July 1982 and June 1984. The specialist chapters in this volume are concerned with photoelectronphotoion coincidence spectroscopy (J. Dannacher and J.-P. Stadelmann), Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance (N. M. M. Nibbering), and fastatom-bombardment mass spectrometry (R. M. Caprioli). Ionization and ion dynamics are reviewed by I. Powis whilst M. A. Baldwin covers the structures and reactions of gas-phase organic ions. Advances in mass spectrometry go hand in hand with instrumental developments. The survey of current trends by T. R. Kemp is, therefore, most valuable as is the following chapter on the use of computers and microprocessors by J. R. Chapman. J. H. Bowie reviews the gas phase reactions of organic negative ions. The important analytical areas of GC/MS and HPLC/MS are extensively covered by M. E. Rose. Applications of mass spectrometry to the identification of drugs and their metabolites, pharmacokinetics and toxicity is the concern of D. J Harvey. Inorganic mass spectrometry makes a welcome return with a chapter from J. Charalambous. The literature coverage is wide and the various reviewers are to be congratulated on producing highly readable and stimulating accounts of their subject areas. The volume is an invaluable contribution to the field and all practising mass spectroscopists should have access to a copy. D. P.
