The Stated Meeting of The Franklin Institute was held at 8.15 P.M. in the Lecture Hall preceded by a dinner in Franklin Hall at which the following Gold Members of 1969 were honored: George W. Furness K. Braddock-Rogers Frank H. Griffi Henry Colvin, II E. A. Eckhardt J. Howard Pew L. K. Sillcox Dr. Braddock-Rogers was present to receive his Gold Key, recognizing his 50 years of membership. The dinner proceedings were conducted by Dr. Wynn Laurence LePage, Chairman of the Board. Before adjourning to the Lecture Hall, Dr. LePage called on Dr. Francis W. Cooke, Manager of the Metallurgy Laboratory, who gave a short talk on “Bones, Beams and Bridge Supports”. This research has been made possible with the help of the fund bequeathed to The Franklin Institute by A. Eugene Benners, Jr. Dr. Martin A. Pomerantz, Vice President and Director, Bartol Research Foundation, called the meeting to order with approximately 200 members and guests present. Dr. Pomerantz stated that the minutes of the Stated Meeting of March 19, 1969, had been published in the May issue of the Journal. There being no additions or corrections, the minutes were approved as printed. Dr. Pomerantz then introduced the speaker of the evening, Dr. Hendrik W. Bode, the Gordon McKay Professor of Systems Engineering at Harvard University. Dr. Bode’s address, entitled “The New Universalist”, was very enthusiastically received, and drew forth many questions at its close from his interested audience. After expressing his deep thanks, and those of the entire audience, to the lecturer, Dr. Pomerantz adjourned the meeting at 9.35 P.M. PETERGEYELIN Secretary
