The Irish Minister for Industry and Commerce, Mr Desmond O'Malley, officially opened the Mostek manufacturing and testing facility at Cherry Orchard Industrial Estate, Ballyfermot, Dublin in May. The plant is a temporary facility pending construction of the permanent Mostek Ireland plant at Blanchardstown, Co. Dublin, which will eventually occupy some 450 000 ft ~ . The manufacturing process will be phased in with test and assembly being the first two phases. Upon satisfactory completion of these phases, wafer fabrication will be added as phase III. The decision of Mostek to locate in Ireland - in the face of fierce competition from other European countries represents a considerable success for the Irish Industrial Development Associations, who anticipate that at full operation the Blanchardstown plant will provide over 1000 jobs. Mostek Ireland presently produces 16 kbit dynamic access memories, erasable/programmable read-only memories and microprocessors. Already half the needs of the Mostek

A new study from the National Computing Centre aims to identify the part software is playing in business and domestic products. The NCC has started work on a microprocessor project to study the use of high level languages. Initially, it will concentrate on high level languages in embedded systems which use microprocessors to provide the logic for their operation, but which are not in themselves computers. The variety of systems covered will range from such products as washing machines to large s~:alc process control equipment. Later stages will study high level languages in small business or freestanding systems such as word processors. The Centre is consulting the major chip manufacturers, users working on embedded systems and suppliers of software. It is anxious to hear from any organizations or individuals with relevant experience. Those interested should contact: Robin Foulger, The National Computing Centre, Oxford Road, Manchester MI 7ED. Tel: 061-228 6333.
