VOW NO4 DECEMBER 1982

AUSTRALIAN CRmCAL CARE

NEW SOUTH WALES Recent committee activity has seen the streamlining of the activities of the Education Sub-committee, providing critical care education for all nurses in South Australia both country and metropolitan, public or private. It is the major focus for the existence of the Confederation of Australian Critical Care Nurses in South Australia.

1991-1992 has been the first full year of operation under the new name of the Confederation, and it has been a venj busy one for both the Executive and the members. I wish to acknowledge the work of the Executive and Committee members over the past year and to thank them for the contributions that they have made on behalf of the membership.

Our sincere thanks go to Conrad Wainwright who has been a longstanding member of our committee. Conrad was not re-elected but we hope that he will remain a willing worker for the CACCN (NSW Branch). Educational Actlvltles

The educational activities of CACCN (NSW Branch) have been many and varied for the year 1991-1992. This year, two one day workshops were added to the Continuing Education calendar. These workshops were well attended and well reviewed.

Country meetings were held in Coifs Harbour, Nowra and Dubbo and the Rural ANZICSiCACCN meeting was held in Wagga Wagga. Conrad Wainwright and I were able to travel to Wagga to lend moral support to the country organisers. 3i Mantell and staff of the Wagga ICU ,e to be congratulated on the very successful nursing seminar day that was run in conjunction with the Rural ANZICS meeting. The CACCN (NSW Branch) Nursing Seminar Day was held at the University of Sydney in March in conjunction with the NSW ANZICS Continuing Education Meeting. Although the venue was not very suitable, attendance was good and the varied topics had something of interest for all attendees. Mr Gavin Leslie from Perth was the Nursing Guest Speaker, and presented his very timely work on the evaluation of different modes of Continuous Renal Replacement therapy. We extend our thanks to all those who presented their work as invited and free papers and to the many people who assisted in the Education Sub-committee in organising the education seminars at the various venues. Plans are well advanced for the Nursing Seminar Day for 1993. The venue is the Hyatt Kingsgate Hotel at Kings Cross and promises to overcome all the shortfalls of last years venue. Miss Bernadine McDonald, who is currently working in the surgical ICU at the John's Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore will be the Nursing Guest Speaker and is to address the meeting on the topic of Trauma Nursing in the USA. Bernadine is formerly of RNSH and is well known to a number of our members. Plans are also well underway for the

Nursing Seminar Day in Newcastle in 1994. Fiona Smith, Jennina Porter and Ruth Weir from the John Hunter Hospital are the local convenors for that meeting. Sydney will host the 19th Australian and New Zealand Scientific Meeting on Intensive Care in 1994. This conference promises to be large so work is already underway. The Convention Centre at Darling Harbour will be the conference venue and themes and social events are yet to be planned. We will be looking for volunteers to assist with the organisation as that conference draws closer. The Education Sub-committee has planning well advanced for the 1993 education program and we look forward to receiving our fridge magnets in the near future. Commlttee Actlvltles

The CACCN Executive and nominees from membership have represented the organisation on a number of committees during the past year. These committees include: The Critical Care Advisory Committee to the NSW Department of Health Critical Care Curriculum Advisory Committees at various institutions

and to expand the membership of the Committee to take into account the personnel required to undertake the many activities outlined above.

The organisation has had the opportunity to review and provide comments on a number of important nursing issues. These include:

From 1993 a number of Grants, Scholarships and Travel funds will be available for members. Forms are available from the Secretary and applications close in February and July each year. Although limited funds are available we anticipate that a number of grants and scholarships will be able to be made each year to assist members.

We hope to be able to produce and mail a number of newsletters to members over the next year. This is in an effort to keep members appraised of all the activities and issues affecting critical care nurses.

Since joining CACCN Inc we have found a number of deficiencies in our Constitution and early next year you will be asked to vote on a number of changes that are required to bring our Constitution up to date. The changes are not to the structure or substance of the Constitution or Association, but merely updating the document to make it currently correct within the national framework

The CACCN (NSW Branch), through your Executive and Committee, will continue to work towards promoting the aims of CACCN Inc and the NSW Branch, and to provide critical care nurses with a vehicle for professional development and growth, and for representation at the highest possible levels on issues concerning nurses - especially critical care nurses. CACCN (NSW Branch) executive and committee take this opportunity to wish all our members a safe Christmas and a prosperous 1993. LORRAINE FERGUSON PRESIDENT
