News From the International Telecommunications Society (ITS) Telecommunications Policy – The New ITS Membership Journal Effective January 1, 2010, Telecommunications Policy became the new ITS membership journal pursuant to a three year agreement struck between ITS and the journal’s owner and publisher, Elsevier. Telecommunications Policy is published 11 times a year. A copy of each issue is distributed by mail to every member of ITS in good-standing. Given that an individual membership in ITS still costs only $100 U.S. per year, it should be readily apparent that there is no better way to subscribe to Telecommunications Policy than to purchase an ITS membership. Other benefits of ITS membership include the opportunity to present, as well as to obtain access to, economic research and strategic policy papers at conferences, workshops or seminars hosted by ITS and to meet and interact with public policy decision-makers, corporate executives, students, academics and industry professionals at numerous ITS-sponsored events throughout the year. Membership benefits also include occasional discounts on ITS publications and a registration fee discount at all ITS Regional Conferences. Finally, all ITS members are automatically added to the ITS-L Listserv, which is used to notify members of upcoming ITS events and of publication of each new issue of the ITS newsletter, Interconnect. ITS members are entitled to send broadcast messages to the entire membership over the ITS-L Listserv following guidelines ITS has established. Meanwhile, the latest edition of Interconnect was published in May 2010. The May 2010 issue and all past issues of the ITS newsletter may be accessed on the ITS web site at www.itsworld.org. 2010 Schedule of ITS Conferences (a) 18th ITS Biennial Conference in Tokyo ITS holds a number of outstanding conferences each year, and this year will be no exception. The local organizer and conference host is the center for Communication, Media and Information technologies (CMI) – a research and teaching center at the Department of Development and Planning at Aalborg University in Copenhagen. The Copenhagen Conference will also feature the 1st ITS Ph. D. Seminar. The objective of this seminar is to allow leading academics, industry experts and researchers to share their knowledge and expertise with a select core of younger researchers in a highly focused learning environment. Up to 15 students will be selected from the responses to the Call for Papers for the PhD Seminar. Based on the topics to be presented by the winning candidates, experts from the ITS network will be chosen to discuss new ideas brought forward by PhD students in small groups. The focus will be on the discussion of ideas presented by the participants, rather than on the mere presentation of papers. A selection of papers presented at the seminar will be encouraged for refereed submission in Telecommunications Policy. The seminar will be linked to and held at the same venue as the ITS European Regional Conference. Access to both the Conference and the Ph. D. Seminar will be free of charge to seminar participants.
