any question of quality, all have already been published elsewhere, some in x957. While this volume indicates the survival of what is without doubt a pleasant family custom, it will probably occur to some to wonder whether, in these arduous days, such re-publication of articles is really necessary.

NORTH WEST METROPOLITAN REGIONAL THORACIC SOCIETY At a meeting of the North West Metropolitan Regional Thoracic Society on 1.4.59, D r /tI. A. Erooga read a paper on 'Ornithosis'. After briefly revlewin.~ the history of h u m a n ornithosis he described the elinico-pathological picture of the condition, which is due to infection by a large basophilic virus and is carried by over seventy species of birds, including budgerigars, parrots and other psittacines. Since I954, 69 patients with ornithosis have been seen at the Luton and Hitchin Chest Clinics. After a few sporadic cases in x954 and I955, a minor epidemic was observed between March and J u n e i956 , when 33 were diagnosed; very few were distinguishable from influenzal pneumonia. Diagnosis was made on serological evidence of significantly raised titres in complement fixation tests to L.G.V./P. virus. None of the patients was severely ill and there were no serious complications. History of contact with budgerigars or pigeons was frequently elicited. Attention was drawn to the potential danger of domestic birds as a reservoir of virus infection.

Karlish was wrongly reported. In his paper on pleural biopsy (p. 230 ) he described his results with the Abrams needle, not the VimSilverman needle, as stated. In carcinomatous cases the proportion of positive results was 47 per cent (with 6o per cent in cases of bronchial carcinoma) not 8o per cent, as reported. Uncommon
