Note from the Editors The Journal of Theoretical Biology was founded by Dr J. F. Danielli in 1961, and continued under his editorship until he died in 1984. Under his leadership and enthusiasm, the Journal established itself as a major platform for theoretical biology. Since the founding of the Journal theoretical studies have become more accepted in experimental journals, a move to be welcomed by all. With this new format we take the opportunity to emphasise our intention to continue to be a major platform for theoretical and conceptual issues throughout biology. S. A. KAUFFMAN L. WOLPERT
