NOTE FROM THE EXECUTIVE EDITOR DR. T. N. HUCKERBY(University of Lancaster) has prepared the following statement concerning the presentation of proton N M R data. The choice of units in the description of N M R spectra has hitherto depended on the preferences of individual authors, with the result that data often need conversion when they are used for comparative purposes. A uniform procedure is given here, in agreement with IUPAC recommendations; it is urged that, in future, papers submitted for publication should conform. CHEMICAL SHIFTS should be expressed in the 3 (delta) scale, expressing resonances to low field of internal tetramethylsilane as positive, upfield signals being negative. This choice of sign convention is logical for not only are nearly all shifts positive, but a low field shift implies increase in frequency and hence transition energy. Where shifts are measured using references other than tetramethylsilane (e,g. hexamethyldisilane or benzene), they should be converted to the TMS s,zzle and the conversion factor cited. C O U P L I N G CONSTANTS should be expressed in the SI unit of frequency, namely Hertz (abbreviated Hz).
