Pump Industry Awards: the winners announced The 2011 Pump Industry Awards Gala Dinner was held in Coventry, UK on Wednesday the 23 March. An excellent turnout witnessed the rewarding of companies, innovations and people that have achieved the highest standards and helped drive the pump industry forward. Held in association with the British Pump Manufacturers Association and World Pumps, the awards are designed to endorse the best practice within the UK Pump Industry in the areas of supply, manufacture, and most importantly – innovation. KSB Limited won the Environmental Contribution of the Year for the PumpMeter and PumpDrive sponsored by WEG Electrical Motors. PumpMeter continuously analyses the pump’s operating data and establishes its energy saving potential. When the energy efficiency icon is shown it indicates that the pump could benefit from measures to save energy. Employing the PumpDrive variable speed system might be an appropriate option. Retrofitting PumpDrive is straightforward as PumpMeter provides all parameters needed to employ PumpDrive. Enhanced with PumpDrive, a pump is turned into an intelligent, variable speed pumping system, ideal for both single pump operation and multiple pump configurations with up to six pumps. The PumpMeter was also a finalist in the Technical Innovation of the Year category. However, this was won by Sterling-SIHI. This is awarded for the most innovative pump/project installation or service introduced onto the market within the last 12 months. Bakery did encompass previous award winner, SIHIdry (Energy & Environmental, 2006). Sterling-SIHI were commissioned to replace an entire vacuum system on-site at Soreen Bakery, eliminating the existing cooling water system for effluent treatment, cooling, and maintenance reasons. Hygienic and quiet operation without acoustic hoods was also deemed necessary by the bakery, in order to promote an open and hygienic environment that could not harbour bacteria. The project was installed, delivered, and producing vacuum 100% on time, within the four months given. “Led by Shaun Hampson, the Sterling-SIHI team was selected as project partners, after a thorough evaluation process. Their team demonstrated a far-superior process knowledge, flexibility, and creative design thinking,” said Paul Tripp, managing director of Soreen Bakery. “Soreen’s method of vacuum cooling is an essential part of enhanced production. Consequently, a bespoke system was necessary; and the Sterling-SIHI solution proved to be one of true ingenuity. Throughout the fully

The success of the installation has been measured on a number of levels. For example, the site now produces almost double the amount of loaves with less production and storage defects. In fact, to date, the vacuum system has experienced more than 30,000 cycles without problems. Thanks to innovative thinking and an innovation in itself (SIHIdry), the new vacuum system will produce 24million loaves of Soreen within just one year.

Throughout this period and at the forefront of these changes were a few men who have stayed the course and have not just weathered the changes, but have been instrumental in driving key aspects of that change. David Seymour is one of these. He moved to Grundfos Pumps in May 1977. Today, because of his knowledge and expertise, he is known to those who work with him at Grundfos as ’Doctor Pump’, but he is also known throughout the industry as Mr. Reliable. His traits include his attention to detail, tons of commitment, as well as a real knack of being able to decode complex technical issues to a non-technical audience in a way that allows them to gain sufficient understanding to move them on to the next stage. An important trait when dealing with the many official bodies he has contact with.
