Judges' comments: "The Weir VSR-2100 pump represents a significant and exciting development in high pressure pumping. Weir's proven Roto-Jet pump has been mechanically integrated with a highperformance SR Drives motor and controller. The resulting system is almost one-third of the size of a conventional unit and is devoid of any gearboxes or couplings. The SR Drive controller adjusts the pumps performance by varying speed, and incorporates intelligence to monitor pump conditions and reduce operating costs." An alternative was the Swingjet, which rotates the discharge pipe through 300°, thus meeting the requirements with just six Swingjets/tank reducing power consumption by 50% A processor controls the nozzle rotation and velocity enabling the angle, speed, dwell-time, repeat actions and velocity to be automatically adjusted to match the level of the tank. As the first installation in the UK this is unique”. Judges special award sponsored by ITT Industries
Winner: Sulzer Pumps and John Crane for The BP Thunder Horse Project Judges' comment: "One engineering project, that has given rise to an unusual and very interesting Award Nomination, caught the respect and imagination of the entire Judging Panel. The very nature of the project, its overall management, its technical make-up and its total relevance to the ethos that lies behind this Awards Programme, has in the opinion of the Judges, deemed it worthy of reward and recognition. Although this Entry has not been voted a winner in its respective category, its quality of content, and the engineering skill it clearly demonstrates, has given rise to this particular presentation. So this year, the Judges Special Award goes to two organisations that have worked together in the creation and management of a highly successful pump and pumping project."
