January 2017

Skimmer pumps used in Paris Metro expansion Japanese pump manufacturer, Tsurumi, has supplied its 8-FSP submersible scum skimmers to extract harmful substances during the construction of the Paris Metro line 14. The Metro network is currently being extended in the northwest of the French capital and new sections should be in operation in 2017.

One section of the site previously housed a rail yard and following its demolition, the 2000 m² site had to be cleared of harmful substances. The soil is infiltrated with crude oil residues and contaminated water produced during the work on this soil. Wells were set up to drain the ground. The water from these wells is gradually

pumped into specially-erected basins for intermediate storage. After the sedimentation stage, Tsurumi 8-FSP submersible scum skimmers draw off the film of harmful substances. They are clearly identifiable by their three red ball floats. Each skimmer extracts around 250 l/min. www.tsurmi.eu

Combined expertise produces new valve island Bürkert Fluid Control Systems and Siemens have collaborated to produce the new Type 8647 AirLINE SP valve island, which is compatible with the Siemens I/O system SIMATIC ET 200SP. Bürkert recently presented the valve island system at SPS IPC Drives in Nuremberg, Germany. The reason behind the strategic partnership between Bürkert and Siemens is maximum system availability and process reliability for pneumatic controllers. The new valve island was developed for use in the food & beverage, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics industries, as well as in water treatment systems. To save space it can be mounted in the control cabinet together with different Siemens modules for

controlling up to 64 valve functions. The valves are directly connected to the Siemens I/O system. The Type 8647 AirLINE SP valve island features pressure sensors and an LCD, which displays detailed status information such as the position of the pilot and process valves directly at the device – both by means of icons and plain text. www.burkert.co.uk
