Welch Foundation Scholarship announcement The Welch Foundation offer a scholarship to one or more students or young scientists who want to contribute to research in the field of vacuum science and technique. Abstract from the statutes - - T h e scholarship is granted for one year which begins on October 1st 1971. If, for some major reason, the scholar cannot be at work on October 1st 1971 he may ask for a delay up to three months. Beyond this limit another candidate will be appointed. The laboratory receiving the student can restrict this delay. - - D u r i n g the period covered by the scholarship the student cannot accept any payment or any other scholarship without the agreement of the Scientific Directorate of IUVSTA. - - T h e grant is: US$ 3500 for work accomplished in Europe US$ 4000 for work accomplished in North America. --Travelling expenses are not included. In special cases, these can be paid for by the Welch Foundation, but for the scholar himself only. - - T h e grant will be paid by quarters at the beginning of each term, according to the following percentages: 30, 23, 23 and 24%. - - T h e list of the laboratories where the work might be done is attached to the announcement. Due to the international character of the grant it is strongly advised that the candidates apply for laboratories situated in another country or state than their own. - - T h e minimum level required is the B.Sc or the equivalent, the Ph.D may be appreciated. Rules of procedure - - T h e Scientific and Technical Directorate of IUVSTA invites candidates for the Welch Scholarship to apply to the following address before April I5th 1971 : Melle B E R T H A U D Secr6taire Scientifique UISTAV 2, Avenue Marceau 92-Courbevoie, France - - T h e application sent by each candidate must include: - - a curriculum vitae and civil status, - - a n attestation of diplomas or their photocopies, - - a letter stating in particular which languages the candidate speaks, reads and writes, and proposing several laboratories and giving an order of preference, - - a n engagement to bear no political activity in their host country, - - a n engagement that the scholar will not transgress the laws of his/her country during the year of the award. - - t w o recommendations from two of his/her former or present professors or research directors. --Candidates will know on June 15th 1971 the result of their applications.

- - T h e chosen scholars will be requested to pass a language examination before the contract is signed. The language will preferably be the language of the host country or English. N B - - T h e candidates who applied for the 1968-1969, 1969-1970 and 1970-1971 period may apply for the new period 1971-1972. 5th Annual Solid State Devices Conference The Institute of Physics and The Physical Society in collaboration with The Institution of Electrical Engineers, The Institution of Electronic and Radio Engineers and The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland Section, is arranging a fifth conference on Solid State Devices from 14-16 September 1971 to be held at the University of Lancaster. The conference will follow the established general pattern, with the aim of providing a forum for the presentation of new work in the areas of applied solid state physics, device production and characterization, together with their associated technologies. Leading workers are being invited to present keynote and invited papers on a wide range of topics. The Programme Committee will attempt to avoid overlap with The European Semiconductor Device Research Conference held in Munich from 15 March-19 March 1971 and on this occasion the duration of the conference will be slightly less than in past years, i.e. from mid-day on Tuesday, 14 September to the afternoon of Thursday, 16 September. Offers of contributed papers of 10 minutes presentation time and 5 minutes discussion time, in this general subject area are invited. In exceptional cases, a request from a contributor for 15 minutes presentation time with 5 minutes discussion time will receive consideration by the Programme Committee. Contributions on the following are particularly welcome: Materials of device interest, Semiconductor memories, Amorphous semiconductors, M.O.S.T., Opto-electronic devices (excluding displays), Silicon devices and technology, Surface acoustic waves. 183
