nchem Tokyo is the largest trade fair in Asia covering the fields of Chemical Plant Engineering, IT process solutions for the chemical industry, and Materials. The four-day show begins on Tuesday 4 November with a detailed program of seminars and a major exhibition showcasing the latest products and services in these fields. Organised by the Japanese Society of Chemical Engineers and the Japan Management Association, the show is expected to attract 85,000 visitors and 320 exhibitors from all round the globe to the Tokyo Big Sight venue [International Exhibition Centre] situated in Ariake, Tokyo. This is the 24th staging of this well-established event and, traditionally, it has provided a good forum for the exchange of ideas and technologies between East and West. Top management representatives, engineers and purchasing executives from various trades such as the petrochemical sector, pharmaceuticals and foodstuffs, are expected to attend.

Japanese Market The Japanese chemical industry is ranked second in the world in terms of its size, with an estimated worth of $205.2 billion in shipments [see graphic]. It is second only to the US market and as such is a vital arena for both domestic and overseas suppliers, OEM’s and end-users. Chemical pumps and pumping systems represent a small but significant factor in this field.

Market Trends Japanese chemical engineering companies procured $2.84 billion worth of parts from overseas in 1999, the last year for which figures Chemical Industry - World Rankings (by shipment)

from the Japan Management Association (JMA) are available. This traditionally insular domestic market is, therefore, beginning to open up and Inchem 2003 represents a major opportunity to grab a slice of the market. According to the JMA, the rate of overseas procurement by Japanese engineering companies has recently been increasing year-on-year. This trend is set to continue in the near future as Japanese chemical companies relocate their production centres to foreign countries where labour and manufacturing costs are cheaper. These overseas manufacturing centres will increasingly send machinery, parts, and materials back to assembly or knowledge centres in Japan, further opening up the once insular market place.

Help for overseas exhibitors To help foreign companies break into the Japanese market place, Inchem 2003 is hosting two events – a ‘Global Sourcing Plaza’ and the new ‘Global Sourcing Seminar’. The plaza is a traditional component of the event, which involves dedicating a corner of the exhibition hall to overseas companies who can then showcase their products to end-users and potential partners in Japan or Asia. By concentrating overseas exhibitors into one corner those visitors who are interested in exploring the possibility of distribution deals, partnerships or other forms of co-operation know where to go to pursue their aims. The Global Sourcing Seminar is basically an extension of the plaza idea. The seminar is exclusively for overseas visitors and provides separate rooms where foreign companies can present their products and new developments to the Asian market in further detail. The organisers provide notification services for the presentations and can help with public relations and translation services. It is hoped the seminar will engender technical tie-ups or sales co-operation agreements.

exhibition preview Environmental technology There will also be an EcoTech Zone at the Inchem 2003 show, located under the banner of the Chemical Plant Engineering strand. Environmental conservation is one of the main concerns of the 21st century and more and more businesses are promoting environmental management techniques. The EcoTech Zone of the exhibition is designed to reflect this preoccupation and will feature products and technologies that have been specifically developed to reduce the burden placed on the environment by factories and chemical engineering plants.

Exhibitor profiles Major Japanese chemical companies, such as Fuji-Techno, and numerous specialist engineering companies will be in attendance at Inchem 2003 offering a diverse range of equipment and devices for application in the field of chemical plant engineering. On display, amongst other things, will be: • Environmental control equipment • Safety equipment • Pumps and vacuum pumps for clean rooms • General construction equipment • Diagnostics • Fire protection devices • Waste treatment • Filters, cyclones and dust collectors Under the banner of IT process solutions for the chemical industry, there will be a slightly different exhibitor profile with the emphasis more on software developers, consultants, training/processing systems, CAD, and R&D support. The third specialist exhibition field at Inchem 2003 – the materials section – will include displays of metallic materials, inorganic compounds, composites, and so forth. There is, therefore, plenty of opportunity for end-users to meet with companies from a wide range of different sectors and, hopefully, there is the potential to win contracts, sign sales agreements or otherwise engage with companies already entrenched in the far east market.

Conclusions Over the last few years the Chinese market has attracted a lot of attention because of the huge potential that exists there. The Japanese market – still the second largest economy in the world don’t forget – still offers tremendous opportunities, however, and it can act as a gateway to the larger Asian market. Many Japanese firms are providing the inward investment that is driving growth in other Asian markets and as the country and its chemical industry continue to open up to outside influences and international trade more and more business opportunities will become available for determined and enthusiastic firms. Inchem 2003 provides a possible launch pad for companies looking to break new markets.

Venue Fuji Techno Industries Corporation, based in Osaka, Japan, will be at the Inchem 2003 show on stand number 11-13. The company’s Super Metering Pump (pictured above) is available in 5 different types and 22 different models. The pumps’ accuracy is +/- 0.1% and the flow rate capability ranges from 0.1 ml/min to 200 ml/min. The pressure range for the series is 2 to 100 MPa [www.fuji-techno.co.jp].
