he nonwovens industry is growing rapidly and this increase is reflected in INDEX 2008, now said to be the world’s leading exhibition of nonwovens. This year’s event, organised by EDANA, will have a special focus on the revolutionary fabric’s contribution to the filtration industry.
INDEX 08, the world’s leading nonwovens exhibition organised by global nonwovens association EDANA, takes place from 15-18 April 2008 in Geneva, Switzerland. Nonwovens are used in a wide variety of applications: traditionally in the medical, hygiene and personal care products industries and increasingly in emergent application areas such as filtration, automotive, cleaning, construction, home furnishing and packaging. They may be a limited life, single-use fabric or a very durable fabric, providing specific functions such as filtering, bacterial barrier and sterility, absorbency, liquid repellency, resilience, stretch, softness, strength,
temperature resistence, washability and cushioning. According to figures released by EDANA, the value of the global nonwovens industry reached US$15.9 billion in 2004, representing 110 billion m2 and 4.4 million tonnes. It is forecasted to grow by an annual 7.1% through to 2009, to reach a value of US$22.4 billion, 163 billion m2 and 6.3 million tonnes. Europe still leads the world in nonwovens production, with production in Europe growing by just over 5% in 2005 to reach 1,403,000 tonnes, compared with 1,336,000 tonnes in 2004 when the annual growth was 3.7%. This puts it ahead of both North America and Asia. Of the total global production of 4.7 million tonnes of nonwovens in 2007, the Middle East region accounted for just 4%.
A focus on filtration INDEX 08, as well as showcasing the diverse range of nonwoven applications, including packaging, composites, automotive, construction, geo-nonwovens and medical, will, this year, reflect the fabric’s growing contribution to the filtration industry – in particular nanofiltration and activated carbon nonwoven filters. Experts in the filtration industry are constantly developing better dry and wet filtration with nonwovens to remove contaminants from the air and water, helping allergy sufferers and improving environmental conditions, and nonwovens have evolved from simply replacing other forms of media to becoming the media of choice in this industry. “Innovative nonwovens technology increasingly satisfies more stringent filtration regulatory requirements,” says Pierre Wiertz, general manager of EDANA.

Over 12,000 professional visitors from around the world will converge upon an exhibition space of over 50 000m2 to see the latest advances in nonwovens technology and perspectives on new applications areas. Visitors are expected from over 100 countries,
while almost 500 exhibitors from around the globe, ranging from raw materials suppliers and machinery manufacturers to converters and brand owners, will be showing the latest technologies. Filtration+Separation talked to some companies exhibiting at the show about the products they would be exhibiting and what they hoped to get out of INDEX 08.
Norafin Booth 2318 Norafin, a Swiss provider of specialty and technical nonwovens, supplies engineered spunlaced filter media for the process liquid and air filtration. The company has recently developed a wide range of high performance filter media using a variety of meta and paraaramide as well as polyimide fibres combined with several after-treatment options such as glazing, laminating or singeing. What do you hope to get out of INDEX 08? INDEX 08 enables us to exchange market knowledge on developments and innovations with all market participants. The show also allows us to meet our business partners from the entire supply chain, reinforce existing partnerships and gain new contacts. What do you think about the current state of the nonwoven market? High-performance, customised product applications have gained in importance as regulations have become more rigid lately and product requirements have heavily increased. Real product solutions enable customers to be silhouetted against the market and to differentiate themselves from a standard product offer. All encompassing product concepts that comprehend the entire development process will certainly gain in importance. What is Norafin exhibiting at INDEX 08? At Index, we will feature our new spunlaced PTFE filter media to dedust exhausted gas in municipal or industrial waste incinerators. In

H&V looks forward to meeting with customers and suppliers at INDEX 08 and introducing our industry leading HVision products. We expect to form new relationships in addition to strengthening the already established ones and look forward to learning more about the newest supplier
The patented NanoWave is a new extended surface, high loft all-synthetic media for the ASHRAE bag filter market with three times the dirt-holding capacity of conventional media. The PerForm family of next-generation filter media and materials achieves class-leading performance and processability and is suitable for HEPA and ULPA use, the company says.Technostat is an electrostatically charged filter media specifically designed for respiratory applications. In addition to these filtration products, H&V will also be promoting its new HVision technology platform designed to enhance the development and commercialisation of breakthrough product
