The p u r p o s e of the S o f t w a r e Survey Section in Computers & Graphics is to e n c o u r a g e the open e x c h a n g e of i n f o r m a t i o n on s o f t w a r e p r o g r a m s u n i q u e to our p r o f e s s i o n a l field. W i t h the rapid p e n e t r a t i o n of c o m p u t e r s into a c a d e m i c and i n d u s t r i a l i n s t i t u t i o n s has come a p a r a l l e l increase in the number of s c i e n t i s t s and r e s e a r c h e r s d e s i g n i n g their own software. The e x i s t e n c e of m u c h of this s o f t w a r e remains u n k n o w n to even those of us who could most b e n e f i t from its use. We b e l i e v e that it is of vital i m p o r t a n c e to our r e a d e r s that such i n f o r m a t i o n be made available.
