Suez completes GE Water acquisition
F
rench utility Suez, together with Canadian institutional investor Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ), has sealed its acquisition of GE Water & Process Technologies in a US$3.4 billion deal (see Pump Industry Analyst, March 2017). The acquisition strengthens Suez’s position in industrial water, particularly in the US and emerging markets. GE Water & Process Technologies had 2016 revenues of approximately US$2.1 billion and around 7500 employees. Suez has formed a Water Technologies & Solutions business unit which brings together the acquired business and Suez’s own industrial service activities. Headed up by Heiner Markhoff, the former president and CEO of GE Water, Suez Water Technologies & Solutions has more than 10 000 employees and over 50 000 customers worldwide. Markhoff will also join Suez Group’s Executive Committee.
“I am thrilled to welcome GE Water & Process Technologies’ teams and know-how. This is an exciting moment for Suez, as our Group now has an ever-stronger knowledge and skillset to bring innovation and enhanced value to industrial and municipal customers around the world,” said JeanLouis Chaussade, CEO of Suez. GE announced plans last year to sell its Water & Process Technologies business. For further information, visit www suezwatertechnologies.com, www.suez.com and www.ge.com
COMMENT As Suez integrates GE Water & Process Technologies, the company’s new Water Technologies & Solutions business unit is now a major player in the industrial water market in terms of systems and services, especially in the US. n
Weir Minerals Europe invests in new facility in Poland
W
eir Minerals Europe has expanded its operations in Poland, with the opening of a new facility in Leszno. The new centre is three times the size of the existing facility and includes increased office space, a specialist training area and two overhead cranes – one 20m high. “The success of our activities in Europe meant that the team outgrew the existing facility in Poland in a relatively short space of time,” explained Bruce Cooke, Weir Minerals Europe’s Comminution general manager. “The new centre enables us to keep a sizeable inventory, incorporate training and testing facilities, and offer better support to customers who require customised products for their applications.” A number of jobs have been created as a result of the expansion and the growing
installed base of Trio products. The Leszno facility is set to become one of Weir’s key facilities for Trio products in Europe, holding a large inventory of products and spare parts. The new centre will play an important role in helping the local team in Poland to manage its growing customer base and increasing demand for replacement parts. With the increased space, the Weir Minerals team will also be able to offer on-site manufacturing services including fitting screen decks, changing crusher liners and some equipment assembly. Part of the new premises will focus on aftersales care. The Weir Minerals maintenance team will train customers’ service personnel and engineers in key areas such as equipment maintenance, and in how to spot the signs that repairs may be required.
