Osmoflo’s technology produces desalinated water for Fortescue Metals
A
ustralian desalination company Osmoflo Pty Ltd has been awarded a contract to supply desalinated water to Fortescue Metals Group at Port Hedland, Australia’s highest tonnage port. The desalination plant will be used to meet the demand for dust suppression water; thereby providing an alternative to drawing upon limited supplies of potable and bore water in the region. Osmoflo was originally engaged by Fortescue to supply a rental plant, which has been in use since 2011. The original system was delivered, fully installed and operational in 12 weeks. Following a review of Fortescue’s water requirements the rental contract has been converted into a longer-term build, own and operate agreement. The sea-water desalination plant, inclusive of intake and pretreatment, has a capacity of 4500 m3 (1.2 million gallons) per day – providing Fortescue with additional capacity to supply third parties within the Port Hedland region. ‘The amalgamation of the original rental contract to a build, own and operate contract is a result of a great working relationship between Fortescue and Osmoflo, which already spans
over four years,’ commented Marc Fabig, Managing Director, Osmoflo. The plant is set to be completed and fully operational as this issue of Membrane Technology goes to press. Fortescue is the world’s fourth largest producer of iron ore, and is listed in the S & P/ ASX50 share index, which represents the large cap universe for the Australian equity market. With a capacity of 165 million tonnes per annum, the company exports mainly to China and Southeast Asia. Contact: Osmoflo Pty Ltd, 382 Diment Road, Burton, 5110, South Australia, Australia. Suez Environnement wins reuse water treatment contract in China
S
uez Environnement has signed a contract worth over E140 million with China’s Beijing Drainage Group (BDG), a wholly state-owned wastewater utility. Under this contract the French company will supply equipment for use in the Huai Fang reuse water treatment plant in Beijing and will be responsible for installation supervision, commissioning and conducting performance tests. To be operated by BDG, the plant has been under construction since 2014 and is scheduled to come on stream in mid-2016. It will be equipped with ultrafiltration (UF) membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology and an ozone system, which will treat the wastewater. These technologies enable the plant to produce optimum quality water, thereby contributing to the conservation of the natural environment receiving the outflow. The wastewater treated by the facility may be reused for city management projects (green-belt type) or discharged into wetland and watercourses. The plant, which will be built underground, will improve the quality of the water environment and produce sound environmental benefits in the south-west region of Beijing. The companies say it will be the largest underground reuse water project in Asia – with a capacity of 600 000 m3 (158.5 million gallons) per day – when it comes on stream in 2016. It will be capable of handling the wastewater produced by over 3 million people. Marie-Ange Debon, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, International Division, Suez

Aquatech completes one year of operating the CSIA wastewater plant
A
quatech International Corp, which specialises in water and wastewater technologies for the industrial and infrastructure markets, recently announced the commissioning and completion of one year of operation of its wastewater treatment project for Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL). The facility is located at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) – the gateway to Mumbai, India’s financial capital and its most populous city – catering to the new international terminal 2. Aquatech had been awarded an EPC contract to supply, on a complete turnkey basis, a 10-million litre (2.6-million gallon) per day sewage treatment system and 4-million litre (about 1-million gallon) per day recycling system for the new airport terminal. The company successfully

completed installation and commissioning in 2014, and handed over the wastewater treatment plant to the client in early 2015. The sewage treatment plant has been in operation for more than a year. In addition, the product water quality exceeds design limits and is being used for HVAC make-up, says Aquatech. ‘The MIAL project is an important milestone for Aquatech in further consolidating its market leadership position in the country’s rapidly growing wastewater treatment and recycling market for infrastructure as well as industrial sectors,’ said Amit Sharma, Vice President, Eastern Industrial Solutions, Aquatech, who notes that Aquatech has also been awarded a comprehensive operation and maintenance contract for the plant. The project integrates a combination of advanced treatment technologies, including a sequencing batch reactor (SBR), Qua Q-SEP ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis processes. SBR is a biological treatment process that incorporates a high level of process sophistication in a configuration that is cost and space effective. In addition to the use of innovative technologies, the project required ingenuity in the design of the facility because of the rigid and unusual space constraints, says Aquatech. The plant is situated on a small triangular plot completely surrounded by utility buildings and an adjacent river, thus posing significant design and engineering challenges. To solve this problem, Aquatech’s engineering team devised a circular design to fit the two SBR basins into the triangular plot and opted to configure the plant vertically. ‘This not only overcame space and size constraints, but also provided an economical approach for the client. The extraordinary design, and efficient and effortless operation of the plant have made it an outstanding example of technological and engineering advancement,’ added Sharma.
