Codes of practice join up The British Standards Institution (BSI) proposes to end the distinction of codes of practice and British standards. Codes of practice would then simply become British standard codes of practice in the same series as other British standards. The BSI would then be more in line with other European practice. The BSI decided the change and the administrative provisions for them at their annual general meeting. The standard makers now await the permission of the Privy Council. The BSI has stressed that the codes will lose no status by the change, indeed they are promised to be more readily acceptable in international theatres of standard work; a rose by any other name.

with 130 welds from 18/8/Nb tidier wire. Most welds are of vee preparation with tig welding of the root run. There was also a 38 mm thick transition weld between the mild steel drum and the stainless steel downcomers. The tubes are water tidied and access is difficult so ultrasonics wastried despite the problems with austenitic welds.

Probes and test blocks were designed for the job which had to be done quickly because of the 1 - 1 0 mR s"~ background radiation and temperature of 40°C (Fig.4). The inspection group of 27 men were specially trained for the job (Fig.5). The group worked in teams of three or four under an inspector qualified to ASME level III. The inspectors were all qualified to at least level I.

Heavy-water reactor surveyed The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) has surveyed its Winfrith steam generating heavy water reactor (sghwr) six years after it was started up. Its primary circuit was originally inspected before service. The survey was thus designed to give information on any changes in operation. The primary circuit is made of 130 type 321 stainless steel pipes - 3 0 0 mm in internal diameter and 16-25 mm thick. These pipes are welded together

The UKAEA say the result of the survey was that no deterioration in weld quality took place in the six years of operation. It is also confident that this kind of inspection is reliable. The shock.pulse testers that Were developed by SKF in Sweden are now to be sold by Lock Instrumentation in Great Britain. These instruments are designed to detect damage in rotating machinery by monitoring shock pulses. They are manufactured by SPM Instrument AB of Sweden.

MG5 and the ECS5. The MG5 is a solid-state set for the frequency range 0.5-12 MHz with a depth range of up to 10 m in steel (Fig.l). It measures 110 x 170 x 330 mm and weighs 5.1 kg.

The power supply is either a 220 V mains or a rechargeable battery which lasts 9 h of continuous running. The scale expansion is to 20 mm in steel, the calibrated delay is 0 - 1 0 m in steel and the attenuation control is for 0 - 8 0 dB. There are accessories which can be added to the basic set. A three digit display may be used for thickness measurement. A monitor with an alarm and light may also be added. The company's range of probes include probes for hot test pieces. The ECS5 is a larger set with a frequency range of 0.25-25 MHz and a maximum depth of display of 15 m in steel (Fig.2). The set is also solidstate but it is heavier than the MG5
