TEIS is a considerable extension and complete re-writing of the first author’s 1939 edition, with very full bibliography up to about mid-1961. It is now a thoroughly comprehensive and authoritative account of textures in metal polycrystals, supported by nearly 600 illustrations and many tables. The book is divided almost exactly into determination and description, interpretation and effects. Recent experimental methods receive emphasis, with numerous pole-figures for technical processes such as re-crystallization, deformation, casting, and electrolytic finishing. There is a systematic review of theoretical aspects of textures from the standpoint of metal physics. The connexion with material properties, both mechanical and magnetic, is exhaustively treated, especially in deep-drawing and generally in respect of the prevention or intentional production of textures. As a monumental work of reference this book will be indispensable to metallurgists. R. HILL
