organized by
Gary L. Glish, University of North Carolina (919) 962-2303 Raymond E. March, Trent University (705) 748-1361 The topic of the 9th Sanibel Conference is “Quadrupole Ion Traps.” As we move into the second decade of the use of quadrupole ion traps as analytical mass spectrometers, it appears at long last that this instrument is well-positioned to Whereas the early be a routine mass spectrometer in a wide range of both analytical and research laboratories. commercial ion trap systems were not even marketed as mass spectrometers, the new generation of commercial instruments have powerfLl capabilities that have been developed in mass spectrometry research laboratories during the past decade. The capabilities of tandem mass spectrometry, including multiple stages of mass selectivity (MS”), and high mass resolution will make the quadrupole ion trap applicable to a wide range of analytical challenges, particularly as the high sensitivity of early commercial ion trap systems is retained when combined with a wide variety of separation techniques. The conference will focus on fundamental and applied developments in quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometry. Included will be the use of ionization techniques such as electrospray and MALDI; structural characterization using MS/MS, MS” and ion/molecule reactions; fundamental principles of operation; and applications to biochemical and other types of systems. The program will include invited speakers and contributed posters. evening session followed by two sessions each on Sunday and Monday will have ample time for discussion.
The conference will begin with a Saturday and a Tuesday morning session. All sessions
The Sanibel Conference on Mass Spectrometry focuses on a well-defined topic in the forefront of active research in a discipline related to mass spectrometry. Its purpose is to meld the expertise of investigators who are involved in fundamental studies, instrumentation, chemistry, and applications that involve the most recent advances in the specific area addressed by the Sanibel Conference. Registration is limited to 125. If more than 125 registrations are received prior to the deadline, preference will be given to applicants whose field of research most closely relates to the topic of the Sanibel Conference. The deadline for registration is December 12, 1996. In order to increase diversity in the scientific attendance, it may be Although there will be no published necessary to limit the number of participants from each institution. proceedings of the Sanibel Conference, a summary of highlights will appear in the Journal of the American SocietJ
for Mass Spectrometry. The Conference is held at the Sundial Beach & Tennis Resort on Sanibel Island, which is off the Gulf Coast of Southwest Florida. This tropical island provides a fine setting for a relaxed and informal exchange of ideas. For additional information contact: ASMS, 1201 Don Diego Avenue, Santa Fe, NM 87505.
