THE EFFECT OF DIET A N D FOOD INTOLERANCES U P O N THE B E H A V I O U R OF AUTI S TI C CHILDREN Dr Edward Danczak, Director of the Centre for the Study of Complementary Medicine at Manchester IBH Victoria Park Hospital, is currently exploring treatment regimes on autistic children aged between 2 and 22 years. Dr Danczak is exploring the effect of diet and food intolerances upon the behaviour of autistic children and he has developed a treatment programme combining conventional medicine with homoeopathy, particular food supplements, herbal medicine and diet. He is currently awaiting a research grant in order to develop this work.

THE U N I T E D STATES N A T I O N A L CERTIFICATION BOARD FOR THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE A N D B O D Y W O R K NCBTMB has carried out a survey of the US therapeutic massage and bodywork profession. The NCBTMB describes itself as an independent, private, nonprofit organization that fosters high standards of ethical and professional practice through a recognized, credible credentialing programme. The survey's findings have led to new 'non-Western techniques', such as shiatsu and meridian therapies, being introduced into the Board's National Certification Examination. A N E W REPORT ASKS 'IS COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE ENTERING THE MAINSTREAM?' A new study (NHS Federation 1997) has uncovered evidence of complementary therapies and medicine being used by a range of GPs, dentists and health-care professionals within the NHS. Wales' call for greater integration of alternatives into orthodox health care, the report also looks at some common management issues which could encourage or discourage its wider introduction in the NHS. It identifies the reasons why there are still barriers to the greater use of complementary medicine (CM) within the NHS. The report published by the NHS Confederation and titled Complementary Medicine in the NHS: Managing the Issues was produced with the support of the Parliamentary Group for Alternative and Complementary Medicine. The study found that whilst the overall level of complementary medicine use was low, there is interest in CM amongst NHS staff and a number of services are currently being planned. The report shows the most commonly used complementary medicine types and the typical conditions for which they are used, Recommendations include a consultation process between a wider group of NHS health-care employees and managers across the UK.
