When I would be at a meeting anywhere, whether at Berkeley or half way around the world, and I would look across the room and see you, I knew things were "looking up." Your presence always guaranteed a lively, thoughtful and most likely productive union among colleagues. Your friendships with colleagues always has had a warm, human side to it. Thank you Werner for contributing so much to all of us. RICHARDM. CHRISTENSEN Chemistry and Materials Science Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory University of California
I would like to express my congratulations to Professor Werner Goldsmith on his seventieth birthday. It was my privilege to have Professor Goldsmith as my mentor at UC Berkely. Not only did he open the door and lead me into the exciting field of biomechanics, he also let me witness a high standard of excellence in the pursuit of knowledge. Indeed, his personal example of hard work and a passion for research has always been an inspiration and a yardstick to measure up to. Through the years, Professor Goldsmith has been an invaluable source of wisdom and insight. On this occasion of celebration, let me take this opportunity to say "thank you and happy birthday" to a great teacher and a true, caring mentor and friend. This special issue of the International Journal of Impact Engineering gives me an opportunity to recall nearly 20 years of a most pleasant personal and professional association with you. In particular, the sabbatical year you spent with us at the University of Patras in 1980-81 was a memorable one. The turmoil surrounding the transition of the Greek universities to socialism did not allow us to produce substantial research work immediately. But your presence there had a lasting impact on a lot of people, especially young people, who got from you the inspiration and the courage to embark in a demanding teaching and research career with little material rewards. Your defence of academic integrity and freedom at times of political terror, will not be forgotten. I join our colleagues at the University of Patras to wish you long, happy and productive years. ANDREW D. DIMAROGONAS W. Palm Professor of Mechanical Design Washington University, St Louis, MI
On the occasion of the special issue of the International Journal of Impact Engineering in honor of Prof. Werner Goldsmith's 70th birthday, I would also like to add my wishes to him for many more healthy years of productive contributions to the science of mechanics, a field that Prof. Goldsmith has served very richly. On this occasion I would also like to publicly thank Prof. Goldsmith, as well as express my deepest appreciation, for his full support and guidance during the period of my dissertation work, which I carried out in his laboratory at the University of California at Berkeley. Because of my long associaton with Prof. W. Goldsmith (since 1974) I am in the position to know that the same feeling of gratitude and appreciation are shared by his great many graduate students. Prof. W. Goldsmith is not only the well known and distinguished Professor of Mechanics, but also the tireles~ research-worker and working with him is an experience that has been unique for anyone who has had the luck to do so.
