On the 28th April, 1986, Professor Dr. Harald Jiintgen, director of the division of coal chemistry of BergbauForschung GmbH and one of the leading coal scientisits in the world, celebrated his 60th birthday. Jiintgen was born in 1926 in Magdeburg and studied chemistry at the Universities of Bonn and Heidelberg, where he obtained his doctorate (in 1955) and habilitation (in 1966) both for physical chemistry. Since 1968 he has been Professor of chemical engineering at the University of Essen. After his scientific education, Jiintgen started his professional career at Bergabau-Forschung, where he was involved with fundamental research into the physical structure of coal, coke and activated carbon, and the utilization of the results for the improvement of existing and development of new processes. The wide range of Jiintgen’s scientific activities is made evident by more than 200 scientific publications. In the field of adsorption techniques, he initiated the production of carbonaceous adsorbents from coal and developed new processes, especially in the field of environmental protection and gas separation. Examples are the cleaning of flow gases by simultaneous separation of SO, and NOx, the treatment of highly polluted industrial waste waters, and the production of pure gases by separation processes. Under Jiintgen’s guidance, these processes have been developed to technical maturity and are used in industry. In the field of pyrolysis, gasification and combustion, the main aim of Jiintgen’s work was to describe the kinetics mathematically on the basis of physical chemistry whereby he developed experimental and mathematical methods of non-isothermal reaction kinetics. The equation established is used world-wide for reactor modelling. In the field of development, he has been process involved in the development of a new gasification process, which uses heat from high temperature nuclear reactors. As a member of the Organizing Committee of the Coal Science Conferences, the International Editorial Board of Fuel and many national
German committees, Jiintgen has always stressed the enormous importance of fuel science for fuel technology. Hopefully, the future work of this outstanding coal scientist may be blessed by the same optimistic spirit and activity as in the past 30 years of his engagement in physics and chemistry of coal.
