Publ Rotterdam: A A BaS/kema, 1977 A theoretical discussion taking into account the 3-dimensior~1 stress distribution near a turmel face, and the rheelogical properties of the rock causing changes of stress (long term effects). This is illustrated by refererie to a s t l ~ of the northern section of the Gotthard road tunnel. 793112 INSTRUMENfATION OF A TUNNEL IN EXTREMELY BAD GROUND AND INTERPRETATION OF THE MEASUREMENTS Meister, D; Wallner, M Proc International Symposium on Field Measurements in Rock Mechanics, Zurich, 4-6 April 1977, V2, P919-933. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1977 Describes a project to drive a road tunnel through Pleistocene deposits of stoney gravels containing silt amd sara. D~crmation stress measurements were made in a test tunnel, and a 3-dimensioral analysis carried out by the finite element method. A significant difference between measured and calculated stresses is noted. It is concluded that the soil is acting as an additiomal support system. 793113 DISPLACEMENT MEASUREMENTS AS A MEAN FOR SAFE AND ECONOMICAL TUNNEL DESIGN Carvalho, 0 S; Kovari, K Proc International Symposimn on Field Measurements in Rock Mechanics, Zurich, 4-6 April 1977, V2, F709-721. The reasons for these errors are discussed with particular reference to the analy~ tical design of tumnel linings. The influence of the stress field on tunnel shape and directional stability are discussed amd the need for stress measurements is emphasised. Auth.
