Data on pP-depths are used to derive a cross-section of earthquakes in northeastern Japan. Travel-time corrections, 7 new focal-mechanism solutions, a double seismic zone at intermediate depths and a shallow earthquake cross-section are discussed. The suggestion that tropical bunching of landmasses may be required during periods of glaciation could, perhaps, explain the rarity of glacial events and the long intervals when land covered the poles but the Earth was not glaciated. Includes I foldout map of Japan's revised geodetic net; bibliographies accompany discussions of gravimetry, theory & data processing, data interpretation and crustal movements.
With only a few exceptions (magnetotellurics and geochemistry) papers in this collation are concerned, both regionally and theoretically, with the seismic evidence for lateral and vertical heterogeneity in the lower crust and upper mantle. Comparison of 172 analyses of Recent to Mesozoic volcanic rocks from New Zealand and 122 analyses of Svecofennian volcanic leptites from the Swedish Precambrian reveals strong similarities between these rock types. This suggests that the leptites form an island arc suite of calc-alkaline rocks, ranging from basalt to rhyolite in composition and that they represent a well-defined rock type containing little or no sedimentary material. Probably they originated at a Precambrian subduction zone. University of Lulea, S-951 87 Lulea, Sweden.
