The articles in this issue begin with two Product Focus stories. The first, ‘New benchmark in pump metering’ looks at metering pumps. A redesigned product range of motor-driven metering pumps set new complete new benchmarks, according to the manufacturer, in which safety, efficiency and environmental protection are not only options – it is a feature of the standard equipment. The second Product Focus explores chemical & abrasive handling in diaphragm technology with abrasive fluids. When fluids contain a particulate or ‘slurry,’ the solid content within the liquid may be abrasive. So, selecting a pump to handle abrasive liquids, several factors need to be taken into account to ensure an efficient and effective solution can be offered and maintained. The wrong choice of pump can lead to excessive downtime for repairs with lost production revenue and high maintenance costs. Our applications this month feature energy efficiency, oil & gas, chemical & abrasive handling and power generation. As ‘Variable speed drives cuts 20% energy costs’ points out, trying to cut energy use and become greener is not always easy, not least because of the time it takes for the cost savings to show up on the bottom line. However, here a manufacturer of water fittings and valves explains how they are saving 20% of the energy costs of a large injection moulding machine, following the fitting of a variable-speed drive. ‘Seal-less matches plunger challenge’, show that seal-less pumps can go where plunger pumps have gone before in the oil & gas industry. When an oil well operator replaced a leak-prone plunger pump with a seal-less diaphragm, the pump worked on the same 23 hour daily duty as its plunger-type predecessor, but with minimal maintenance and no sign of wear, leaks or loss of performance. The article concerning chemical & abrasive handling, ‘Reliability and safety with AODD technology’, takes an example from a Middle Eastern Chemical manufacturer of specialty chemicals. It was looking for a pump to transfer its liquid chemicals from drums, barrels and intermediate bulk containers (IBC) to the chemical reactors and knew that reliability was of prime importance. To this end, it turned to air-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) pump technology. Our final application looks at power generation. We take a look where dry running capability is vital for a nuclear plant in India. When two 700 MW units of the Rajasthan Nuclear Power Plant required booster pumps and main boiler feed pumps, the supplier had to prove in advance the dry running capability of its equipment. By using a test pump with similar characteristics, the company was able to verify that all the design criteria used for the real project pumps was able to fully guarantee a proper behaviour. I hope that you enjoy the issue. Best regards
