...Continued from front page economic growth make the development of more advanced desalination innovations necessary to address the country’s long-term water security. Each company, selected for the project because of its leadership and innovation within the desalination sector, will build and operate its own test plant to develop and demonstrate desalination technology over the course of 18 months. This time frame will enable the companies to gauge which desalination technologies emerge as the most efficient and, therefore, have potential to be powered by renewable energy. All of the four test plants will demonstrate innovation in membrane technology, such as reverse osmosis and forward osmosis, which are more energy efficient processes than the

thermal processes currently in use in most of the desalination plants throughout the UAE. As part of the pilot project each company will collaborate with the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology – a research-driven, graduate university in Abu Dhabi. The entire pilot project test-facility will be located in Ghantoot, 90 km (56 miles) northwest of Abu Dhabi. Masdar says it selected Ghantoot because of its easy access to deep sea-water and the availability of existing utility connections from a now-decommissioned desalination plant. During the course of this project the test plants will also provide 1500 m3 (396 258 gallons) of potable water per day to Abu Dhabi’s water infrastructure – enough to meet the water requirements for around 500 homes.

Newterra acquires Crane Co’s water division

N

ewterra Ltd, a Canadian company that designs and manufactures modular water treatment systems, has acquired the business of Crane Water from diversified industrial manufacturer Crane Co. Newterra adds the US-based maker of watertreatment equipment to its sales and engineering, and manufacturing facilities in Canada, the USA and Europe. The move brings its employee count to almost 250 people worldwide. Commenting on this acquisition, Robert Kennedy, President, Newterra, said: ‘We see the acquisition being a catalyst for job growth and efficiency for the operations in Trooper, Pennsylvania and Venice, Florida, and for Newterra as a whole.’ 16

Membrane Technology

Kennedy says that he foresees a bright future for the water division as part of Newterra because it shares the same focus – clean water. The acquisition brings valuable expertise in important water technologies, including reverse osmosis (RO), ion exchange, deionisation and deaeration – opening new opportunities with Newterra’s existing clients in the mining sector and other markets. The acquired business also brings additional market opportunities for Newterra’s modular treatment systems for potable and process water, sewage, wastewater and groundwater. Whilst the name Crane Water will disappear, with the company becoming an operating unit of Newterra, the Cochrane and Chicago Heater brands will be retained. The acquired business

has sales and engineering offices in Trooper and Venice, where it also manufactures RO filtration systems. Those locations will continue operations under Newterra. Kennedy continued: ‘One of the keys to our ongoing success is having full control of our processes. This acquisition builds on that approach – adding tremendous “engineering horsepower” to our team, and bringing RO production in-house. It is an excellent fit with where we are going as an organisation.’ Contact: Newterra Ltd, 1325 California Avenue, Brockville, ON K6V 5Y6, Canada.
