Grundfos invests in North American municipal wastewater base near Chicago

Aker Solutions expands subsea manufacturing capacity

rundfos has opened a new business development competency centre in Illinois to serve the North American municipal wastewater market. Located in Aurora, about 40 miles west of Chicago, the centre is housed in the 105 000 sq ft pump manufacturing facility of the former Yeomans Chicago Corp, which Grundfos acquired in 2008. Since that acquisition, Grundfos has upgraded the Aurora facility to begin production of Grundfos branded wastewater pump systems which were previously manufactured in Europe and Asia. Production of the first of these products – the Grundfos S-Line of energy-efficient wastewater pumps – started in February. The Aurora facility currently employs 93 full-time personnel, including 31 machinists working two shifts five days per week. Grundfos North America CEO and president Jes Munk Hansen said: “This centre is pivotal to Grundfos becoming a leader in the North American municipal wastewater business. We have big ambitions for the next five years, as we strive to double – if not triple – our sales in that key segment, with commensurate growth in our product offering.” Grundfos has invested more than US$50 million in municipal water-related activities in the US over the last few years, including acquisitions, increased production and infrastructure, information systems and product launches. Grundfos expects to invest another US$50 million in its North American operations over the next five years. “These investments are part of a global strategy that aims to capture 10% of the worldwide municipal market and generate roughly US$1.3 billion in export sales,” said Hansen. Hansen says that Grundfos looks at the market in terms of the next two decades, not the next two quarters. “As a privately held organisation, we can afford to have a long-term perspective with regard to our investments and business strategy. Our dedication to the municipal water market in North America is a long-term strategy,” said Hansen.

ker Solutions is investing NOK500 million in its subsea business, doubling the capacity of its manufacturing plants in Norway and Malaysia and adding a new service base in Malaysia. The planned investments, which are in response to growing market demand in the subsea segment of the oil and gas industry, include adding new machines and expanding facilities in Tranby, Norway and Port Klang, Malaysia, and opening a new service facility in Labuan, East Malaysia which will support projects in the Asia-Pacific region. Aker Solutions says the investments will facilitate market share growth within subsea production technologies, including subsea trees, control systems, pumps and work-over systems. “The subsea market has strong fundamentals and this steady growth is expected to continue. We are now preparing for expansion in all markets and regions and these investments give us great momentum,” explained Alan Brunnen, executive vice president of Aker Solutions’ subsea business area.
