Australian Water Resources Council. Commonwealth Department of National Development, Canberra. Nature and Resources, Vol. IV, No. 3, 1968 p. 13-15. The Council, which first met in March, 1963, has as its primary objective the provision of a comprehensive assessment on a continuing basis of Australia's water resources, and the extension of measurement and research so as to provide a sound basis for the planning of future development. It consists of Commonwealth and State Ministers primarily responsible for water resources.

The Council gave early attention to the collation of available data on Australia's water resources, and in 1965 published a Review of Australia's Water Resources 1963. This document not only presented the first official assessment of surface and underground water resources, but also drew attention to the serious deficiences in current data-collecting programmes. A revised edition will be published in about 1970. In 1967 the Department of National Development published on behalf of the Council a catalogue entitled Stream Gauging Information, Australia, June 1965. The catalogue is to be published every five years, with annual supplements. Arising from the work of an earlier panel on desalination, a report entitled A Survey of Water Desalination Melhods and their Relevances to Australia was published in 1966 as the first volume in a new Australian Water Resources Council Hydrological Series. Probably one of the most important steps taken by the Council was the decision to select approximately 100 representative basins for detailed hydrologic studies. The area of the basins will in general be less than 100 square miles, in order that each may be representative of a reasonably homogeneous environment. The Council is starting to give attention to the estimation of future water requirements. G. A.
