Long-lasting seals are targeted at chemical processing applications
D
ichtomatik Ltd – the authorised UK distributor of the DuPontTM Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) range of materials – now supplies Kalrez 7275 seals which, it says, have a long service life in chemical processing applications. As reported previously, DuPont Performance Materials developed the FFKM to achieve a high level of sealing performance in aggressive chemicals processing and manufacturing environments (Sealing Technology, May 2017, page 4). Based on a proprietary and patented crosslinking system that has been developed specifically for the chemical processing industry, the seals exhibit minimal swelling and improved retention of physical properties when exposed to aggressive chemicals such as concentrated nitric acid, organosilanes, chlorosilanes, pure ethylene oxide, butyraldehyde, amines, vinyl monomers and acrylic monomers, says Dichtomatik. Light brown in colour, Kalrez 7275 has a Shore hardness (A) of 75 (on the slab) and 81 Shore M (on the O-ring); 100% modulus of 9.7 MPa; tensile strength at break of 14.5 MPa; elongation at break of 160%; and compression set of 22% (70 hours at 204°C or 400°F). The product is available in a broad series of standard O-ring sizes and custom parts for a wide range of sealing applications. Kalrez 7275 will benefit many applications that depend on mechanical seals as part of their critical processes, including pumps, valves, compressors, filtration columns and analytical equipment. Dichtomatik also offers DuPont Kalrez LS390 series of FFKM sanitary seals that have
been designed specifically for use in sectors that include the life science, food and beverage, and pharmaceutical industries (Sealing Technology July 2019, page 6). For further information, visit: www.dichtomatik-kalrez.co.uk
PBT compounds provide greater resistance to hydrolysis and ageing
S
peciality chemicals company Lanxess has unveiled a new generation of hydrolysis-stabilised polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) compounds. Called Pocan XHR (xtreme hydrolysis resistance), they have been developed to provide greater resistance to hydrolysis and ageing in hot and humid environments in automotive applications. The company says that they have achieved outstanding results in the American Society of Automotive Engineers’ (SAE) SAE/USCAR-2 Rev. 6 long-term tests. ‘In the automotive industry, these tests on the finished part are the absolute benchmark in terms of hydrolysis resistance,’ explained Dr Claudia Dähling, PBT material expert at Lanxess. ‘In our very strict internal specimen tests, based on the USCAR specification procedure, the new compounds achieve Class 4 or even Class 5 – the two highest gradings. This makes them the material of choice for PBT components, which have to work reliably under the influence of humidity and temperature throughout their service life.’ In addition to its outstanding hydrolysis resistance, Pocan XHR has other benefits, says the firm. For example, its elongation properties and high resistance to alternating temperatures make it suitable for over-moulding metal parts that are exposed to temperature fluctuations.
